Source: QRLAN UNLIKELY try out wide in the dying seconds to veteran lock Danny Coburn has secured Ipswich its first win of the season, 18-10 against Wynnum Manly at BMD Oval.
Playing his 171st Wizard Cup match for the Jets, Coburn finally delivered coach Trevor Gillmesiter two competition points after promising outings against Burleigh and Redcliffe.
The result means Wynnum Manly is in last place after three rounds, a shock to many who tipped them as likely competition pace-setters after an unbeaten pre-season.
Admittedly the baysiders have faced the bye however, and are in good company with Toowoomba and Burleigh also in the bottom five.
Most worrying for coach Neil Wharton is that in 160 minutes of football, the Seagulls backline which features NRL-experienced Brian Jellick, Jim Ahmat, Daniel Sorbello and Simon Phillips - has scored 0 points.
Against Ipswich the baysiders tries came through forwards Kerry Smith and Gary Winter, with opposition coach Gillmeister understandably proud of his sides defensive effort.
At one stage Wynnum had six or seven sets at us on our line and we didnt crack, said the man known as The Axe.
There are around five guys in our team straight out of bush leagues and they could have quite easily given up after a while and thought At least we had a go, but they didnt.
Im so happy for them because they are such a good bunch of blokes and I know theyre only going to get better. They worked their backsides off in the first two games as well, but we just didnt get the results.
In what was a scrappy affair at times, both sides bombed several scoring opportunities on the way to a halftime score of 8-0 in Ipswichs favour.
After the home side struck back in the second stanza, scores were locked at 12-10 to the Jets until Coburns match-sealer.
The win proved particularly sweet for the Jets, given they lost both curtain-raisers and had not won in any grade since the commencement of the 2006 season.
With prop Isaak Ah Mau struggling through the game with a virus, Gillmeister praised the increased workload of fellow bookends Bevan Heuir and Cameron Mulcahy.
Ipswich shapes up to local rival Toowoomba at QLD Group Stadium next Sunday, while Wynnum Manly will go in search of its first win when it meets Central at Browne Park on Saturday night.
