Source: www.northsydneybears.com.auThe halves combination of Bladen Baird and James Maloney and a solid defensive performance has given the Bears Flegg the two points, running out winners 24-6 against the Western Suburbs Magpies.
Keeping their opponents scoreless in the first half the Bears had a fulltime job doing it in the first quarter, as the Magpies attempted and failed numerous times to get a look at the bears line. The Bears relentless defence created an opportunity for five-eighth Bladen Baird, who picked up a loose ball, skilfully fended off 2 or 3 Maggies and ran 70 metres to score.
And to top it off the Bears scored again right on the half time bell. Half and Captain James Maloney put through a well judged grubber kick for winger Matt McDougall to score. Half time score 12-0.
The first quarter of the second half was a real arm wrestle till Wests were the first to score via fullback Donald Thompson in similar style to Matt McDougall.
Showing great judgement and negating a possible try by Wests, Matt McDougall then intercepted the ball and ran 70 metres to score. The Bears came close to dominating from that point.
Close to full time James put in another well weighted kick that fullback Joel Bennett further toed forward and dived on to score.
James Maloney converted all four conversions. Final score 24-6 to the Mighty Bears.
The half combination of Bladen Baird and James Moloney, which has improved every match was a driving force in the Bears win. James Maloney in particular directed his team well throughout ably assisted by five-eighth Baird.
"Mad Dog, that's what we call him" injured player Martin Field exclaimed after the second of Matt's high powered tries. While in the forwards Arnold Mano, Tupou Peaua and Mick Morris helped the Bears finish strongly.
Coach Steve Carter had encouraging words for his team. "Today you showed you ARE a team especially in defending your line".
In Premier League on Sunday good performances from Daniel Russell, Ben Ellis, Aaron Trinder and Ben Black and an 18-6 half time lead were not enough to give the Bears the two points as Balmain rallied in the second half to win 20-18.
Daniel Russell scored two tries and was the teams' main play maker in the first half. While Ben Ellis also scored and was the Bears hardest worker in defence once again.
In the Bears Harold Matthews match against Manly, Tom Scrivener scored Norths first try and Casey Faets scored the second which Junior Rika converted. Manly running out winners 30-10.
Best players were Junior Rika, Josh Nicholls, Jaye Bass, James Maher and Josh Moses.
In the SG Ball game also against Manly Auatama Iese scored the Bears first try in the corner which was converted by Liam Foran. Captain Tim McDonald barged over for Norths second try. Fulltime score 54-10 to Manly.
Best players for the Bears were Tim McDonald, Siaosi Liumauna, Nathan Searle, Isaac Vaisagote and Daniel Casa.
