Hull FC blow woeful Warriors away in clinical 1st half display
Mon May 1, 2006
Hull FC ran riot against bottom club Wigan Warriors to give new coach Peter Sharp a dream start to his Super League career and bring Brian Noble's honeymoon to an abrupt end with a 54 ? 12 victory.

The in-form Black and Whites ran in nine tries, seven of them in a one sided first half, to ease to a fourth successive win to consolidate their place in the engage Super League top six.

But it was back to square one for the ailing Warriors, who suffered their worst defeat of a miserable season and remain anchored to the foot of the table after a 10th defeat in 12 games.

Hull produced champagne rugby from the moment chief architects Richard Swain and Richard Horne combined to get second rower Lee Radford over for the first try after only four minutes.

Super League's leading tryscorer Kirk Yeaman, who looks certain to win his first Great Britain cap against New Zealand in June, took his tally for the season to 17 on 11 minutes and proved the perfect foil for his winger, Kirk Dixon, to follow him over the line four minutes later.

Wigan, who looked to have turned the corner with last week's big win at Huddersfield, had their moments, with debutant winger Nathan McAvoy seeing plenty of the ball, but their finishing could not match Hull's aggressive defence.

The 2,000 travelling fans were stunned as winger Nathan Blacklock and full-back Motu Tony finished off some breathtaking handling to go over for two tries apiece before the break.

With Paul Cooke landing all seven conversions, including ones from both touchlines, Wigan were heading for total humiliation as they trailed 42-0.

But Australian winger Pat Richards leapt high to take Dennis Moran's high kick to open Wigan's account six minutes into the second half and he converted his own score.

The Warriors added another try when substitute Jordan James was put through a gap by battling skipper Sean O'Loughlin, with Richards kicking his second goal.

Hull's clinical finishing deserted them in the second half but a superb offload from Jamie Thackray created a try for Horne and Dixon grabbed his second courtesy of another cut-out pass by man of the match Cooke, who added his ninth goal from as many attempts.
