Wigan recorded a crucial well deserved victory at the JJB Stadium on Friday night against the Warrington Wolves.
A workmanlike effort saw Stuart Fielden make his Warriors debut as he put in a mammoth eighty minutes in the forwards. Wigan led 12-0 before the visitors pegged the game back to 14-12, but a strong second half show with three further tries saw the Warriors home to their second victory at the JJB in five days.Warrington were kept scoreless in the second forty.
Wigan took the lead after 8 minutes, Dobson with a short pass close to the line and big Kiwi Iafeta Paleaaesina dived over for the try. Michael Dobson struck the goal and the Warriors got off to a great start, 6-0.
On ten minutes Wigan were in again this time a superb team effort. The ball must have gone through five or six pairs of hands as the Warriors kept the ball alive. Calderwood was twice in the move as Wigan broke free down the middle. Orr and Ashton were also involved, Nathan McAvoy crossed for the try, which Dobson converted 12-0.
On 20 minutes, Warrington opened their account, Simon Grix with the try after he managed to find a gap to the left of the posts. Lee Briers conversion made it 12-6.
A Dobson penalty on 24 minutes extended Wigan's lead to 14-6.
A short pass from Lee Briers put Toa Kohe Love in for the Wolves second try,14-10 on 33 minutes. Briers added the conversion to make it 14-12.
Briers put in a 40/20 kick towards the end of the half to test Wigan but the home defence held strong. Just two points separated the two teams at half time.
Wigan opened up the second half strongly and on 50 minutes a long pass from Ashton found Brett Dallas free out wide and he scooted over for the Warriors third try 18-12.
Michael Dobson hit the conversion from wide out to give Brian Noble's men a 20-12 scoreline. Wigan were denied a further try shortly after, Richard Silverwood calling a forward pass from McAvoy to Calderwood.
On the hour mark Wigan did get another try, Higham with a clever turn and pass and skipper Sean O'Loughlin was there in support to dive over. Dobson's goal meant the visitors needed three scores, 26-12.
Wigan scored again late on through Bryan Fletcher as he fell on a loose ball to make it 30-12.This time the conversion was missed.
Warrington never really looked like hauling themselves back in it and the four Super League points in a week have restored the belief Wigan can pull away from trouble.
