Another crucial Super League win as the Warriors defeated Wakefield Trinity Wildcats at the JJB Stadium on Friday night.
Wigan were clinical in attack and for much of the game the Wildcats simply couldn't cope. There were some outstanding performances, Danny Orr, Chris Ashton, Sean O'Loughlin and Bryan Fletcher all impressed in a game which puts Wigan now level on points with the Wakefield Wildcats and above the Catalans Dragons.
The Warriors left the field to a standing ovation which was more than well deserved.
Wigan missed the chance in the opening two minutes to take the lead, a Michael Dobson penalty narrowly wide, the Wildcats penalised for a high tackle. On four minutes the Warriors were awarded another penalty chance, which this time Dobson struck to give Wigan a 2-0 lead.
Michael Korkidas was given ten minutes in the sin bin for a late nudge on Danny Orr as he kicked to clear, Dobson's second penalty goal made it 4-0 with ten minutes on the clock.
A Dobson chip to the corner looked to give Dallas a chance for the games first try on 15 minutes, unfortunately the winger was unable to hold on to the ball.
Dallas made a fabulous break from his own 20 metre line but was held just short by Halpenny. Jeffries was penalised for holding down as Wakefield were stretched and the stand off was given ten minutes in the sin bin by Ashley Klein. With the Wildcats down to 12 men Danny Orr put in a short pass blindside to Bryan Fletcher who was able to crash over for the try with 23 minutes gone. Dobson hit the goal to make it 10-0.
Wigan were in again soon after, this time Fletcher with the pass sending in Mark Calderwood for his second try in a week. Michael Dobson hit a great conversion from out wide to give the Warriors a 16-0 advantage.
Right on the stroke of half time, just as the visitors had wasted an opportunity at the other end as Jeffries pass only found Nathan McAvoy, Danny Orr broke free. Supporting on his outside was Mark Calderwood and the flying winger was able to score his second try of the match to the delight of the home fans. Dobson's conversion gave Wigan a commanding 22-0 half time advantage.
A clever Sam Obst grubber kick was seized upon by Adam Watene for the Wildcat's first try of the match on 44 minutes, Rooney added the goal to make it 22-6.
Wakefield's Kiwi forward David Solomona was penalised close to his line and with Wigan in buoyant mood Scott Logan off loaded to Danny Orr for a try, which Dobson converted to give Brian Noble's men a 28-6 score.
The visitors hit straight back; Obst sending in Halpenny for Wakefield's second try which Rooney converted 28-12. The Wildcats still in it.
Credit must go to Nathan McAvoy for the home sides fifth try. Wakefield losing it and McAvoy showed great footballing skills to kick the ball and eventually re gather to dive over. Dobson's goal made it 34-12 on 56 minutes.
Sean O'Loughlin's try from close range and a Dobson goal extended the score to 40-12.
David Solomona wasn't done and he scored two quick tries, the first as he dummied and his sheer pace took him over. The second showing his power close to the line. Rooney converted both times, 40-24. For Wakefield it was a case of too little too late, for Wigan another important win which also lifted them off the bottom of the table above Catalans Dragons.
