A tough local derby went the way of the Wigan Warriors as they defeated the Salford City Reds at the JJB Stadium on Friday night.
The victory, Wigan's fifth in a row, was based on hard work and at times some resolute defending against a determined Reds outfit who have been a difficult side to crack this season.
Bryan Fletcher won the man of the match for scoring one try and setting up another, Danny Orr's touchdown opening up an eight-point lead late on.
Wigan pressed in the early stages, twice Salford lost possession close to their line but the Warriors were unable to gain an early score.
On ten minutes the Reds were denied a try by the video referee, Coley lost the ball close to the line as John Wilshere looked to ground the ball.
The deadlock finally broken on 16 minutes, Danny Orr with a grubber kick which bounced awkwardly and Bryan Fletcher was able to get the touchdown for the first try as he did last week against the Wildcats. The try was converted by Michael Dobson to make it 6-0.
On 25 minutes, Wigan were in again, Wayne Godwin with a good break down the middle. Dobson put a little kick to the corner and as Junior Langi slipped, Brett Dallas touched down. This time the extras were missed 10-0.
Salford opened their account on 32 minutes. Former Warrior Luke Robinson with the break and chip kick, Ryan Clayton diving on the ball underneath the posts, Myler added the extras 10-6.
A Dobson penalty shortly after made it 12-6 and that's the way it stayed until the interval.
On 52 minutes, Robinson created again, his short pass and centre Aaron Moule was able to take the ball shoulder high for the visitors second try, this time Myler missed the extras 12-10.
A high tackle by O'Loughlin on Robinson and Wigan were penalised under their own sticks. Myler's goal leveled the game at 12-all.
A high tackle on Danny Orr and another Dobson penalty edged Wigan ahead 14-12 with fifteen minutes left.
Great work by Bryan Fletcher, break and pass to Danny Orr sent Wigan in for their third try, a crucial score underneath the posts, Dobson's goal made it 20-12 which meant Karl Harrison's side needed two scores with less than ten minutes left.
This was another important win for the Warriors as they look to keep up the recent momentum and move up Super League. The fans at the end were singing, "We are staying up," and with the confidence the side is showing you wouldn't argue.
