Source: www.wiganwarriors.comWigan Warriors made it eight wins from nine games with a narrow 14-10 success against the Huddersfield Giants at the JJB Stadium on Friday night.
As a spectacle this game was littered with mistakes. It was like chalk and cheese from the superb eighty minutes at Leeds the week before but for the majority of the 14,000 plus Warriors fans it was two more crucial Super League points against the Powergen Challenge Cup Finalists. In the end Brian Noble's men were hanging on and defending as if their lives depended on it. All that mattered was the win and Wigan got it, their third win over the Giants in 2006.
Both sides struggled early on; as the rain fell the sides were guilty of errors with handling mistakes and penalties. That pattern was to continue for most of the game.
The deadlock was finally broken on 17 minutes, a kick by Paul was lost in the air by Nathan McAvoy and Kevin Brown, on loan from the Warriors was able to gather and cross for the try for the Giants. De Vere struck the extras to give Huddersfield a 6-0 lead.
On 21 minutes, Wigan drew level, Bryan Fletcher scoring from dummy half, Dobson hit the conversion 6-6.
On 34 minutes Huddersfield edged ahead with a De Vere penalty, Wigan penalised at the play the ball.
Right on the stroke of half time Michael Dobson converted a penalty 30 metres out to make it 8 all and that's the way it stayed until the break.
On 46 minutes, Wigan came close to their second try but wasted a good opportunity, Orr and Fletcher combined and Chris Ashton was their in support but lost possession of the ball close to the Huddersfield line.
On 60 minutes a further De Vere penalty made it 8-10.
On 73 minutes at last some relief for the home fans as the Warriors got themselves close to the line and from a short pass it was Danny Orr who was able to burrow under a tackle for the try under the posts. Dobson hit a simple conversion to make it 14-10.
Huddersfield pressed close to the line but Wigan held firm for the win. What a huge relief when the final hooter sounded and the points were in the bag.
