Mon September 11, 2006 Source: www.quins.co.ukHarlequins coach Brian McDermott hailed his side's battling performance that ensured their Super League safety for another season. Solomon Haumono and Lee Hopkins both scored two tries to help Quins to a narrow win over Wigan in a dramatic game at The Stoop. McDermott said: "It was a massive game, a huge result and gutsy performance from the players. I am relieved that our relegation worries don't have to go down to the last day.
"Solomon Haumono was scary today, he was outstanding and I'm glad I didn't have to defend against him out there.
"I thought Wigan played very well especially in the second half and they made it a nervy last 10 minutes."Bryan Fletcher scored a hat-trick of tries for Wigan but the fightback was too little, too late for the visitors. Wigan coach Brian Noble was pleased with his side's second-half performance but was disappointed with their first-half showing. Noble said: "Harlequins were outstanding in the first half and we didn't really get going. But in the second half we showed how good we can be.
"I thought that Bryan Fletcher had another good game today and Sean O'Loughlin was outstanding in the second half.
"I was disappointed with some of the refereeing decisions that did not go our way. We had two tries ruled out which I did not agree with.
"But over all Harlequins had a better kicking game than us today and deserved the win."The defeat ends Wigan's faint hopes of making the Super League play-offs, while Harlequins leapfrog them in the league and end their relegation fears. Source: www.quins.co.uk |
