Wigan Warriors ended the 2006 season with a convincing win over 2nd placed Hull FC at the JJB Stadium. The team were keen to finish Super League XI on a high and sign off with the two points. The result never looked in doubt as Brian Noble's men raced into an 18-0 advantage.
Brett Dallas started after recovering from a knee injury and plays in his final game for the club after seven years loyal service. Michael Dobson passed a fitness test and starts. Michael along with Scott Logan, Wayne Godwin and Danny Tickle played their last game for the club.
The result sees the Warriors with ten wins from their final twelve games, form to match any of the top sides in the competition. It certainly sent the loyal fans home with a smile on their face after what had been a season of roller coaster emotions.
Real credit must go to all of the squad who dug deep. The fans who have stayed loyal sent the team off with a standing ovation as they walked round the side of the pitch after the final siren of the season sounded.
It was a special night for a number of players wearing the Wigan shirt for the last time. Brett Dallas said goodbye after seven years a Warrior. It was also the last chance for fans to see Wayne Godwin, Scott Logan, Michael Dobson and Danny Tickle in the cherry and white.
Wigan took the lead on seven minutes, Orr with an inside pass sending in Iafeta Paleaaesina for the first try of the night under the posts, Dobson converted the extras to make it 6-0.
On 22 minutes, Wigan were in again, great dummy from Michael Dobson who sent two Hull defenders the wrong way and the young scrum half was in for the four points. Dobson hit the conversion, 12-0.
The Warriors continued their dominance ten minutes later with a fine three-man move, Chris Ashton the try scorer but great quick passing from Godwin and Hansen set the full back up for the points. Again the conversion was spot on from the boot of Dobson, 18-0.
Hull finally got some points on the board a minute later, Matt Dale with the Airlie Birds try from a Danny Washbrook pass. Paul Cooke missed from out wide, 18-4.
Right on the stroke of half time Wigan got try number four, Dobson with a clever grubber kick close to the line and Ashton was quick to re-act for his second try of the night. Dobson made it four from four from the left hand side, 24-4.
Early in the second half Wigan extended their lead, Harrison Hansen the scorer, the second rower given the try after consultation with the video referee. This time the conversion hit the posts, 28-4.
Richard Swain was sent to the sin bin following a late tackle on Danny Orr after he had kicked on the final tackle. Swain had been involved in a spat with Scott Logan in the first half where both players had been spoken to. Dobson hit the penalty 30-4.
With Hull down to 12 men, Brett Dallas did well to off load to McAvoy who somehow managed to ground the ball out wide. The extras were missed, 34-4.
With Vaealiki sin binned, Hull exposed Wigan out wide, Motu Tony with the try. Paul Cooke hit the goal, 34-10. Shaun Briscoe scored for the visitors which Cooke converted.
Wigan were to get the final try of the night which was fitting through Gareth Hock. Brett Dallas on his last appearance took the conversion from wide out, unfortunately his goal effort just faded short. Dallas wishing to end his Wigan career in Brian Carney style, remember that conversion at Huddersfield at the end of last season.
The attendance of 16,554 confirmed the highest average at home for the Warriors in the Super League era with over 200,000 watching the fourteen Super League games at the JJB, thank you.
