Source: www.weststigers.com.auThe Balmain Tigers continued their recent winning form, overcoming a tenacious Manly Sea Eagles to win 20-14 at Leichhardt Oval on Sunday, May 7.
Manly opened the scoring, crossing in the right hand corner after taking advantage of an overlap for a 4-0 lead after five minutes.
Balmain levelled when winger Chance Bunce scored after quick hands along the backline created an overlap.
Half-back Marc Russell crossed in the left hand corner for an 8-4 lead at half-time.
Manly grabbed the lead soon after resumption, scoring a converted try under the posts for a 10-8 scoreline.
Four minutes later replacement Alan Shirnack scored next to the left hand post after a Manly error from the restart gave the Tigers possession from a dropout and in that set Russell sent a superb ball onto Shirnack, who hit a gap at pace and dragged a defender over the line with him. Russell's conversion put the Tigers back in front 14-10.
Manly scored in the corner again a few minutres later after taking advantage of an overlap and scores were once again level at 14-all.
With 5 minutes to go centre Robert Chauvet scored out wide after the Tigers kept the ball alive in the Manly 10m zone and he eventually found a gap and set sail for the tryline, taking defenders crashing across the line with him in a valiant attempt to hold him up, which was all to no avail. Five eighth Steve Moses sent over a great conversion from near the sideline for the Tigers to regain the lead 20-14 and at full time the Tigers were victorious.
Players' Player was awarded to Samu Wara in his second match back from injury, while the Man of the Match went to new recruit Gavin Cowen.
