Penrith have won all three under age competitions on offer this season defeating Newcastle 22-20 in an incredible upset victory.
The Knights were minor premiers this season after being undefeated for the opening 17 rounds of the season whereas Penrith finished the regular rounds 10 points behind Newcastle in 5th position.
It looked to be all Newcastle in the opening exchanges with Scott Dureau scoring in the 5th minute. Luke Walsh converted for the Knights to lead 6-0.
Liam Campbell struck back for the Panthers in the 14th minute to put Penrith on the board and Matthew Forwood converted to level up the scores.
Newcastle hooker Terence Seu Seu scored a powerful individual try that had a striking resemblence to the heroic try by Steve Jackson in the 1989 Grand Final when he weaved and stepped his way through defenders in a fine effort. Walsh was unable to convert with the Knights up 10-6.
Jarrod Sammut's attempted grubber kick was plucked out by Dureau who was cut down in cover defence by Forwood just short of the try line. Callan Richardson went from dummy half down the blindside where there was no Penrith defence to push the Knights eight points clear. Walsh was unable to extend Newcastle's lead, which the 14-6 scoreline remained that way until half-time.
Penrith had to score first in the second half and they did with a great break by Geoff Daniela on the end of a deep backline movement with centre Michael Jennings backing up on the inside to score. Forwood added the extras to put the Panthers within two points.
Jaye Mairleitner put Penrith into the lead for the first time when the skipper crashed over from dummy half in the 48th minute. Forwood pushed the Panthers out to a four point lead.
Newcastle struck back three minutes later when exciting winger Akuila Uate scored a dazzling 80m try from nothing and had too much pace for the Panthers defence. Walsh converted to put Newcastle up 20-18.
Penrith were down by two points with six minutes remaining when they put up a desperate bomb to the ingoal area where Wiremu Weepu knocked it back and regathered to score for a 22-20 lead.
Campbell could have scored the match-winner for Penrith but was ruled to be slightly off-side. Newcastle threw everything at Penrith in the final two minutes but the Panthers defence held firm.
Earlier in the year Penrith won both the Harold Matthews defeating the Bulldogs and SG Ball defeating South Sydney titles taking out a rare treble in the three under age competitions. The Panthers have a big junior base and it'll be interesting to see how new coach Matthew Elliott handles the rise of the young talents in the district.
The result was a sweet success for former Parramatta legend Brett Kenny who was coach of the Penrith Jersey Flegg side. Kenny who has been on the outer at the Eels for years has been involved in coaching various under age sides at Penrith and has proven to be a success. Kenny however won't be with the Panthers next year as Jersey Flegg coach.
