Sea Eagles spoil Tigers Leichhardt party
Mon March 26, 2007
Manly were without star players Matt Orford, Steve Menzies and Steve Matai and still managed an impressive 19-8 victory against Wests Tigers at Leichhardt Oval.

Wests Tigers staged a colourful Harmony Day spectacular during half-time of the game with dancers representing many nationalities and cultures living in Australia performed in the wet conditions much to the appreciation of the crowd.

The weather may have been sour for the match, but a strong crowd of 15,185 were in attendance with Manly's victory being the major spoiler for the celebrations.

Anthony Watmough scored in the 6th minute with Jamie Lyon converting to give the Sea Eagles an early 6-0 lead and could have led 10-0 when Lyon was denied a try following a deft grubber kick from Michael Monaghan with Michael Robertson ruled to have taken out a defender. The Tigers worked their way up the field and received a penalty in good position for Benji Marshall to put Wests first points on the board.

Robbie Farah leveled up the scores in the 31st minute with a try and Marshall booted the Tigers ahead 8-6.

Robertson made up for his earlier infringement when he scored right on the stroke of half-time following a perfectly timed kick from Monaghan. Lyon was unable to convert with Manly leading 10-8.

Watmough was denied by the video referee just into the second half when a well worked move saw Watmough go through a big hole to score. The video referee ruled that Glenn Hall proved to be an obstruction even though the defender was no where in sight of Watmough in what was a poor read by the Tigers.

Manly's disappointment was short lived with Matt Ballin scoring two minutes later when he wrapped around Watmough. Lyon added the extras for Manly to lead 16-8.

Lyon landed a penalty goal in the final stages and Monaghan landed a drop goal in the final seconds to seal victory.

Manly will take plenty out of their victory winning without Orford and Menzies at one of the hardest away grounds to win at. They are building up their season nicely and appear to be moving forward in the right direction despite former captain Ben Kennedy retiring last year.

Wests Tigers on the other hand are winless after two matches and face up to Parramatta who are also winless this Friday night at Parramatta Stadium.

Sheens said after the match, "We had good ball in the first half on the back of a reasonably good penalty count. Most of the ball we started with was deep in our own territory. I'd say the best part of 90 per cent of the ball we got was to start in our own 20 metres.

"It was hard work to attack from there. The kicking game and the conditions were tough with the wind but Manly handled it better.

"It wasn't a good game for the crowd from that point of view. This is the sort of day you get occasionally at this time of year.

"We are disappointed. We have got some issues. We are going to have to have a good look now at some changes.

"Our Premier League side has won both of their games. There was probably a reason to lose it by 30 tonight but the boys stuck in.

"Again, we can't continually be losing games with poor handling like that.''
