Lyon to fight dangerous throw charge Tue May 15, 2007 Manly and New South Wales centre Jamie Lyon will contest a dangerous throw charge in his bid to play for the Blues in the opening State of Origin match.
Lyon was placed on report for a tackle on Parramatta Eric Grothe during Manly's hard fought 22-12 victory on Friday night.
The powerful centre was left with no option but to fight the charge tomorrow night in his bid to play for the Blues for the first time since 2003.
No standby player has been announced and it will be no surprise if Lyon gets off the charge.
Manly prove they are the real deal Mon May 14, 2007 Any doubts about whether Manly are the real deal this season was put to bed on Friday night when they scored four tries in 14 minutes to put away a determined Parramatta outfit.
The Sea Eagles have been the competition high flyers this season along with the Storm. Manly have eight wins and one loss against the Cowboys whereas the Melbourne are expected to defeat the inconsistent and struggling Bulldogs tonight and sit side by side with Manly with the same amount of wins and losses.
Manly scored four tries in their 22-12 victory with outstanding fullback Brett Stewart crossing twice in the 55th and 63rd minutes with other tries going to Jamie Lyon in the 49th minute and Chris Hicks in the 59th.
Parramatta led 6-2 at the break with halfback Tim Smith crossing in the 14th minute. Zeb Taia scored with 12 minutes remaining once the Manly blitz was over and done with.
One of the stars for Manly was utility Michael Monaghan who has performed outstandingly all season at halfback, hooker and five-eighth. Monaghan, 27, has been given a release by the Sea Eagles to continue his career as a halfback and it's been somewhat a surprise that clubs who are desperately struggling in the No.7 jersey, eg, St George Illawarra and Brisbane haven't been throwing the cash at one of the prime reasons for the Sea Eagles success in 2007. Former Broncos legend Allan Langer even suggested that Brisbane should just buy a halfback rather than develop one.
Monaghan after the match said, "The thing I really want to do is play halfback. It's no secret that's why I want to move on. I have got offers over in England and Australia.
"I've been playing a few different positions but the thing I'm most pleased about is the consistency. The problem I've probably had in the past is that I'd have a couple of good games and a couple of average games."
Manly coach Des Hasler described the contest as a "A real arm wrestle."
Whereas Parramatta coach Michael Hagan was critical of the soft penalties handed by referee Paul Simpkins and said, "They're the ones that we've really got to do something about because I don't think the people running our game understand the damage that they're doing to games like tonight and football teams when they're under the pump.
"That's the one disappointing aspect of tonight's game. Teams should have to fight their way out of trouble, within reason."
One thing that is for sure is that Manly are the real deal and it's going to take a very good side to knock them off come Grand Final day.
