The CFMEU Canberra Raiders have held on against a fast-finishing Panthers outfit to claim a 34-30 victory at Canberra Stadium last night.
Raiders flyer Phil Graham signalled his return to form in the top grade with a blistering performance, scoring a hat-trick of tries to see the Raiders dash to a commanding 34-18 lead in the second half.
The Raiders opened the scoring in the 9th minute, with Graham grabbing his first try of the night. The Panthers hit back with 2 tries to take a 10-6 lead, but 2 late tries to the Raiders saw them take an 18-10 advantage into halftime.
The Panthers struck early in the second half, but the Raiders pulled away with 3 more tries to take a seemingly unassailable 16-point lead.
There was little to like about the final 10 minutes of the match for Raiders fans however; just as it looked as though the floodgates would open the side leaked 3 late tries to see the final margin reduced to just 4 points.
The Raiders suffered a major early blow, with prop Troy Thompson leaving the field with a wrist injury and not returning for the remainder of the match.
The win keeps the Raders finals hopes alive, with the side set to travel to Townsville for another crucial encounter against the Cowboys next week.
