Tue July 31, 2007 Brisbane and Manly will do battle on Sunday at Suncorp Stadium with a near capacity crowd expected to celebrate the Broncos 20 years of NSWRL/NRL Premiership existence. Rugby League has enjoyed 99 years of outstanding tradition in Queensland and in 1987 the game took a dramatic step with the BRL and QRL reluctantly deciding to enter a team in the Sydney Premiership and relegate the proud Brisbane competition to lower class status. The Brisbane Broncos were born and in their first premiership match they defeated Manly 44-10 at Lang Park (now Suncorp Stadium) with Terry Matterson and captain Wally Lewis each scoring two tries and Matterson landed eight goals for a total of 24 points. Manly were defending Premiers heading into the 1988 season under the captaincy of Paul Vautin and the Sea Eagles on the day were no match for the Broncos with the match made famous by the Don McKinnon on field taking a leak incident during a break in play. Despite the 44-10 result that day, Manly would end up finishing the season in 4th position losing to Balmain in the opening week of the Finals and Brisbane narrowly missed out on the top five finishing in 7th position. Manly head into Sunday's game with a strong chance of finishing with the Minor Premiership and Brisbane have been in good recent form despite captain Darren Lockyer out for the remainder of the season. Tonie Carroll has again been named as Broncos five-eighth and he had an outstanding game against the Sharks last week in that position until forced off the field injured.
