Source: www.broncos.com.auThe Ergon Energy Broncos have kept their finals hopes alive with a desperate win over the Canberra Raiders at Suncorp Stadium.
But they did it 'the hard way', the emotion surrounding the home farewell of several players enhanced by the 30-19 win.
Petero Civoniceva, Dane Carlaw and Brad Thorn ? who finished with a telling try ? were playing their last home match for the Broncos, while Shaun Berrigan and Brent Tate were also part of a special lap of honour at the conclusion of the game.
The Broncos had to come from 13-6 down in the second half to win.
"We did it the hard way," said Civoniceva (pictured today).
"It took us 50 minutes to get our act together. We fixed a few things up at halftime."
Broncos' coach Wayne Bennett said he had been extremely worried about the Raiders, who came ready to play and looked like winning until the final 20 minutes of the game.
"I was more nervous today that if we were playing a top-four team," said Bennett.
"It wasn't pretty but we got the job done and have given ourselves a chance to get into the finals next week."
The Broncos now move into eighth spot on the ladder, but must beat the Eels at Parramatta Stadium on Sunday to ensure a crack at the finals.
Canberra scored first through Brett Kelly but the Broncos answered through Joel Moon in the 10th minute.
Thorn was extremely unlucky to have a video referee decision go against him when he appeared to get the ball down in the 33rd minute.
Smart Canberra half Todd Carney snapped a field goal right on halftime for a 7-6 lead.
Phil Graham kicked the Raiders clear in the 47th minute when he ran 70 metres to score.
The Broncos got a break when Carney knocked a pass down making a tackle and then ran 70 metres to score, only to have it disallowed for a knock-on by the video referee.
Then Corey Parker ran a nice short ball from Shane Perry to score in the 55th minute and cut the lead back to one.
Seven minutes later the video ref awarded Steve Michaels a try from a Perry grubber, and the Broncos were in front.
Thorn sealed it with a barnstorming individual effort from 30 metres out in the 66th minute, with Tonie Carroll scoring six minutes after to put the match beyond doubt.
Canberra coach Neil Henry was filthy about the Carney try being disallowed, but Bennett said that was football.
"They go for you some days and against you on others," he said.
"Thorn, Carney ? they are tough calls.
"I didn't berate the video referee after the Thorn decision because they are tough calls.
"It's one person's decision and you have to live with it. We are never going to get perfection."
BRISBANE 30 (J Moon, C Parker, S Michaels, B Thorn, T Carroll tries; Parker 5 goals) defeated CANBERRA 19 (B Kelly, P Graham, S Logan tries; T Carney 3 goals, field goal).
Crowd: 31,614.
