Sharks finish on a high in Canberra
Sun September 2, 2007
Source: www.sharks.com.au

The Sharks have finished their 2007 campaign on a positive note with a win in their final match of the season against the Canberra Raiders.

Running in four tries to two, the Sharks out-enthused the Raiders on their home turf, coming away with the 22-12 victory.

With back to back wins to finish the year and the two competition points from the victory over the Raiders, takes them to 22 for the season. Pending results on Sunday, even though they lost nine games during the year by four points or less, the Sharks could finish just one win outside the top eight. Their positive 60 for and against ratio also indictates a team which was perhaps better than their 11th placing would indicate.

Winger Luke Covell, who was anxiously a phone call from his wife Julie regarding the imminent berth of their first child, was again solid for the Sharks, crossing for two tries while also having a hand in another scored by young fullback Mitch Brown.

Paul Gallen was also strong and did his best to put his name in the selectors minds for the Australian team which will play the Kiwis following the Grand Final.

The Sharks took a 12-6 lead to half time and extended that advantage when Covell crossed for his second, before an Isaac De Gois try, scored after some good lead up work from Ben Pomeroy, sealed the result.

In the earlier games it was all Canberra, with the Raiders winning Premier League by 46-6, while in the Jersey Flegg the Sharks tried valiantly before losing a close contest by 26-22.

SHARKS 24
Luke Covell 2, Mitch Brown, Isaac De Gois tries, Covell 3 goals

CANBERRA 12
