Australia has won the Tri-Nations series after a gripping golden point win 16-12, Darren Lockyer ending the perfect season where he achieved every honour the game could offer with a try underneath the posts.
Australia and New Zealand played one of the greatest test matches of all time as both teams threw everything at each other for 80 minutes; 80 minutes that got us no closer to deciding a winner with both teams deadlocked at 12-all.
The last 10 minutes of the test was action packed as both teams traded field goal shots, both shots missed by the smallest of margins. It almost culminated in a last minute try to the Kangaroos as Willie Mason broke clear and kicked ahead for chasers. A bad bounce for Kiwi fullback Brent Webb saw Australia winger Greg Inglis play for the ball but was unable to regather -- fulltime sounded.
The first stanza of extra time was no less action packed. Both teams threw everything at each other and traded field goal attempts.
But it all culminated with one error in defence by the Kiwis in the second extra time period, a brilliant line break by Jonathan Thurston 40m out from his own line setting up the golden point try for Darren Lockyer who scored underneath the posts.
Full Report to come.
