Chester Hill open up Jim Beam Cup campaign with victory Mon March 26, 2007 Geoff Robinson and the Chester Hill Rhinos have begun their Jim Beam Cup campaign in perfect fashion defeating Asquith 22-16 at the Terry Lamb Complex on Friday night.
A good crowd was in attendance at the Terry Lamb Complex on a warm Friday night and more impressive was the crowd considering that the Sydney Bulls were playing just down the road at The Crest and the Bulldogs NRL side was doing battle against the Panthers at Penrith Stadium.
Chester Hill played the perfect football in the opening 30 minutes as they crossed for three tries with the forwards powering the way up the middle and playing the percentages perfectly.
The Rhinos began to play sloppy football and lose their way when Asquith lost two players to the sin bin for infringements only a few minutes apart from each other. Mistakes crept into the Chester Hill game and Asquith with only 11 players nearly scored as they found the overlap outwide with only great cover defence saving the day.
Chester Hill went into half-time leading 18-0 and Asquith came out the stronger side after the break and scored to reduce the margin back to 18-6. Nathan Barry added a penalty goal to give the Rhinos a comfortable cushion leading by more than two converted tries. Barry slotted over another penalty goal to edge Chester Hill ahead by another two points.
Asquith produced their best football in the final five minutes as they crossed for two tries with Rhinos captain David Thompson in the sin bin. Their final try happened right on the siren reducing the margin to just six points after the conversion.
The Rhinos side included four Chester Hill Hornets juniors Dean Loder, Matt Lamb, Travis Robinson and Thompson and they all had strong matches. Second rower Rhys Ellis was voted Players Players in the post match presentation.
Robinson said after the match that he was happy to get the two points and that there's only one way for Chester Hill Rhinos and that's up.
The Rhinos had only one trial together before this match and their combinations looked rusty after the early burst.
Chester Hill are at home again this Friday night against The Entrance at Terry Lamb Complex with hopefully a bigger crowd to be in attendance with a good win now under their belts and the Bulldogs not playing an NRL match on the same night.
Local footy is what the game is all about and the atmosphere and enjoyment was second to none at the Terry Lamb Complex last Friday night.
Scoring details aren't available at this point and will be published in the Results section as soon as they come to hand.
