It was far from a breezy day at the beach for the North Queensland Young Guns, as Burleigh took the wind out of the high-flyers with a crunching 34-24 win at Pizzey Park on Saturday.
In front from start to finish, the Bears showed they will be genuine contenders for this year's premiership, returning to their trademark in-your-face style of seasons past.
Indeed the contest was an often fiery affair, with four Young Guns on report and players from both sides leaving the field sore and sorry.
The combatants were literally at each other's throats from the fifth minute, as forwards Ray Cashmere and Martin Griese stood toe-to-toe at the ruck, resting their forearms on one another's larynx.
By that stage Burleigh had already posted a 6-0 lead through Leigh Coghill, who later finished with a double against his former club.
The Bears forged onward for an 18-0 lead by the 25th minute and, at that stage, it was entirely indicative of the difference in execution by the two sides.
North Queensland's passing in particular was sloppy, while their discipline left much to desire, falling behind 6-1 in early penalties.
Burleigh's men were certainly no angels, but incidents such as a lifting tackle by Young Guns Scott Smith and Cashmere were both blatant and a sign of obvious frustration.
Joining Smith and Cashmere on report were John Frith and Karl Johnson, guilty of separate high shots. North Queensland well may have argued that Bears skipper Ryan Gundry should have joined the list, knocking Frith out cold from a tap later in the game.
Everyone was kept busy, not just the referee and scoreboard attendant, but also the medical staff and video adjudicator Tony Maksoud.
Just before halftime Gundry positioned his head awkwardly in a tackle on Ben Vaeau and was left sprawled on the ground. He recovered and, moments after the break, was involved in a tackle which saw Rod Jensen taken from the field. Likewise Jensen returned and played on.
A more serious injury befell Young Guns half Brady Payne, who limped from the field with what appeared an ankle injury. Meanwhile Burleigh prop and ABC Man of the Match James Griffiths was again left with a bloodied nose, having broken it a week earlier.
For his part, fourth official Maksoud was made to work for his pay, called on for several tough calls, some of which were contentious but evened out in the end.
A myriad of thumping tackles and a fightback by North Queensland in the second stanza, winning the half 20-16, makes for a much-anticipated rematch when the two sides meet again in Round 14 at Dairy Farmers Stadium.
In round Four the Bears will face Redcliffe at Dolphin Oval on Sunday at 3pm, while North Queensland hosts Easts on Saturday at 5.30pm.
BURLEIGH 34 (Leigh Coghill 2, John Flint, Jordan Atkins, Adam Hayden, Trent Purdon tries; Nick Parfitt 5 goals) d NORTH QUEENSLAND 24 (Ben Vaeau, Rod Jensen, Sam Faust, Karl Johnson, Mark Henry tries; Ben Farrar 2 goals) at Pizzey Park.

Round 3 Wizard Queensland Cup Preview.
BURLEIGH v NORTH QLD Pizzey Park, Saturday March 31, 2.00pm *ABC Live Telecast Referee: Gavin Morris
THE STORY: An early top-of-the-table clash between two of the favourites for this year's titles. Both teams featured in the 2005 grand final, but experienced mixed fortunes last year, with Burleigh missing the top five altogether and North Queensland exiting the finals with three successive losses. Interestingly one of Burleigh's star players so far this season has been Leigh Coghill, considered superfluous to the Young Guns' needs at the end of last season.
THE STAT: Nick Parfitt needs just eight points to reach the 700-point barrier in the Wizard Cup. In his sixth year of State League at just 22-years-old, the Maryborough phenomenon is unsurprisingly leading all scorers this year with three tries and 10 goals in two appearances.
THE STAR: Young Guns' centre Ben Farrar has impressed greatly with his first two performances in Wizard Cup, running onto the ball well and being first-choice goal-kicker. It should be a cracking contest out wide with Mark Henry also in the centres for the Guns and Jordan Atkins and Alex Glenn opposite them for Burleigh.
CHANGES: BURLEIGH - No announced changes. NORTH QLD: In - Keiron Lander. Out - Scott Bolton.
CHARGES: NORTH QLD - Karl Johnson (G2 Careless High Tackle) - 0wks + 93pts.

EASTS v CENTRAL Langlands Park, Saturday March 31, 3.00pm Referee: Clayton Sharpe
THE STORY: Two clubs with contrasting fortunes in the opening rounds. Easts has won its first two games by a combined 36 points, while Central has lost its first two by a combined 38 points. There are signs the Tigers might not get things all their own way however, with Comets coach Steve Anderson confident his young squad has learnt some valuable lessons in the opening fortnight.
THE STAT: Centre Wade Liddell makes his comeback to the Wizard Cup for the first time since appearing in the extra-time grand final for Easts in 2004. The Tigers' all-time leading try scorer in the State League has played internationally for Scotland since leaving our shores
THE STAR: James Munns' dark horse performances in the trials have now officially scored the 17-year-old a scholarship with the North Queensland Cowboys. However, the mop-haired Comet may have met his match in shaggy-headed Easts prop Sinave Faitale.

NORTHS v IPSWICH Bishop Park, Sunday April 1, 3.00pm Referee: Justin Eastwood
THE STORY: Norths has scored 92 points in two games and Ipswich has posted 18. Indeed it's been a case of floodgates open for Norths in big wins against Tweed Heads and Wynnum Manly. Meanwhile Ipswich has struggled for penetration in games against Burleigh and Easts, despite boasting attacking players such as Ricky Bird and Jason Bulgarelli.
THE STAT: No less than five players from these two sides were reviewed by the judiciary this week. Scott Anderson of Norths received a two-game ban for a reckless high tackle.
THE STAR: Sika Manu was a powerhouse for Norths in their 46-10 demolition of Wynnum Manly last Sunday. The giant youngster is scaling the ranks quickly.

WYNNUM MANLY v TWEED HEADS BMD Kougari Oval, Sunday April 1, 3.00pm Referee: Michael Wise
THE STORY: Although neither side has won a game yet this season, this could very well be the match of the round if both sides play with the requisite hunger. There's no denying both teams have talent, it will be a matter of their respective coaches - Shane McNally and Troy McCarthy - being able to bring it out in their charges.
THE STAT: Denny Lambert has played for six Wizard Cup clubs and is now in his second stint with Wynnum Manly. The former QANTAS Player of the Year missed the first two games after coming back late from a knee injury.
THE STAR: While he has his doubters, pint-sized Chris Sandow is a definite fan favourite in the Wizard Cup. Set to make his Tweed Heads debut after switching from Souths Logan, he will be heartened by recent performances from kindred spirits Matt Bowen and Preston Campbell.
CHANGES: WYNNUM MANLY - In: Denny Lambert, Wade Bachmann. Out: Matt Smith, Daniel Frame. TWEED HEADS - In: Chris Sandow, Chris Farrell. Out: Matt Petersen, Michael Hodgson.
CHARGES: WYNNUM MANLY - Ben Czislowski (High Tackle) - Dismissed.

Roy Friend, 9. Matthew King, 8. Matthew Austin. Interchange: 14. Chris Farrell, 15. Selasi Berdie, 16. Daniel Conn, 17. Chris Sandow. Coach: Troy McCarthy.
SOUTHS LOGAN v REDCLIFFE Davies Park, Sunday April 1, 3.00pm Referee: Justin Davis
THE STORY: Souths Logan were shellshocked by last weekend's 40-0 trouncing at the hands of North Queensland and few would give them a chance against reigning premier Redcliffe. However the Dolphins have come to expect a tight tussle from the Magpies, narrowly beating the black-and-whites 20-14 and 38-28 last season.
THE STAT: Kicking three goals last weekend, Alwyn Simpson played his first fixture game since being hit by a car late last season. The accident cost him a spot on the wing for Redcliffe in the grand final and a premiership medal. Simpson is also a former Souths Logan player.
THE STAR: Watching an pre-season trial, a veteran player manager cast an eye on Souths Logan tearaway Mananui Te-Heu-Heu. "He's a tough one that one," he noted. The assessment was spot on the money, with the tongue-twisting forward more than holding his own since graduating from colts to senior football.
CHANGES: SOUTHS LOGAN - In: Jerry Ahern, Paul Stanley, Adam Kambouris. Out: Brogan Gibson, Josh Peacock, Adrian Maloney. REDCLIFFE - No announced changes
CHARGES: REDCLIFFE - Matt Harris (G1 Careless) - 0wks + 56pts, Danny Burke (High Tackle) - Dismissed.
Souths Logan Magpies: 1. Quentin Laulu-Togagae, 2. Daniel Sorbello, 3. Kyle Lodge, 4. Mick Anschau, 5. Matt Templeman, 6. Phil Dennis, 7. Paul Rolls, 13. Scott Marks, 12. Tanu Wulf, 11. Jerry Ahern, 10. Darren Glase, 9. Cameron Joyce, 8. Josh Griffith. Interchange: 14. Kieran Whalley, 15. Mananui Te Heu Heu, 16. Adam Kambouris, 17. Paul Stanley.
