One of the oldest rivalries in Queensland Rugby League came to a head on Saturday as perennial battlers Souths Logan sprang a thrilling 20-10 upset against Wizard Cup pacesetters Easts.
Coming off four losses in succession, the Magpies secured the surprise victory with a length-of-the-field try in the final minute to centre Kyle Lodge.
Lodge intervened just as Easts looked like stealing the game, picking up the scraps after Isaac Kaufmann launched a dangerous cross-field kick to tryscoring machine John Tamanika.
It was a deserved result for Souths Logan, which led 8-6 at halftime, out-enthused the Tigers and scored four tries to two.
"I'm very pleased for the boys. They've put so much effort into their preparation to get to where we want to be. They got the result of that hard work today," co-coach Jason Burnham said.
"We had a tough run there where we played the top three clubs from last year in succession, followed today by Easts.
"We've been building to this for a few weeks now. Against Aspley we showed some good signs and we were definitely in the hunt against Burleigh last week."
Adding spice to the long rivalry between the two inner-city clubs, Magpies spearhead Brandon Costin made his return from knee and ankle injuries. Two seasons ago Costin was cut adrift by Easts and not in amicable terms.
Still a week-to-week proposition at 34-years-old, Costin scored a try and did something few others in the game are capable of, switching between halfback and second row.
"Brandon Costin makes a huge difference. He was our man of the match today," Burnham said.
"He's in the right time at the right place, has a wealth of experience and leads by example. He gives us some spark and variety in the forwards. When the other team is tiring, Brandon adds another dimension."
A total of three players were placed on report in the second half for dangerous throws. Anthony Boyd went into the book for Easts, while Magpies Dennis Conlon and Josh Griffith will also be reviewed. Griffith, another player let go by Easts, was a late starter in place of Dinny Kyle and also impressed against his former club
Meanwhile for the Tigers, John Tamanika scored his 10th try of the year from just seven games, retaining his standing as the competition's leading scorer.
Next Sunday Souths Logan tackles Norths at Davies Park, while Easts faces Burleigh at Pizzey Park. Both games kick-off at 3pm.
SOUTHS LOGAN 20 (Kyle Lodge 2, Brandon Costin, Quentin Laulu-Togagae tries; Paul Rolls 2 goals) d EASTS 10 (John Tamanika, David Tyrrell tries; Matt Lockyer goal) at Langlands Park.
