Source: www.qrl.com.auBurleigh returned to the winners' circle on Saturday, defeating Central 28-10 after scoring five tries to nil in a stunning first half blitz.
Ahead 28-0 at halftime and splitting the Comets up the middle with ease, the Bears initially looked set to rack up a cricket score at Pizzey Park.
However Central retained a sense of pride and fought hard until the very death, unlucky not to narrow the gap even more as the victors retreated into hibernation.
Burleigh's first try came just eight minutes into the contest, yet it was a 10-minute splurge before halftime where the real damage was done, as Kale Burton, Leigh Coghill and John Flint all waltzed over.
The fact that four of the five tries were scored by forwards was indicative of the contest in the opening stanza, where the Bears had a clear edge in strength and efficiency around the ruck.
Central would have considered itself unlucky that a few early calls did not go its way, including a disallowed try to Ray Garrett in the sixth minute due to an offside ruling.
Not withstanding the Comets also carried the hallmarks of a young and inexperienced team, falling off tackles, losing the contest on the ground and struggling for combinations.
Playing his second Wizard Cup game prop Burton was again impressive for Burleigh and, along with fellow bookend James Griffiths, had the opposition back-peddling throughout the game's formative stages.
Fullback Nick Parfitt was another to shine for the Bears, scoring a strong try, kicking well at goal in blustery conditions and executing two brilliant cover tackles.
Based on the first half alone coach Jimmy Lenihan had plenty of reason to smile, avoiding a club-worst record of five losses in succession.
There were worrying signs in the second period however for the four-time grand finalists, loose carries leading to a rapid turnover of possession and a Comets fightback.
Once more Nathaniel Bowman exuded an air of class and composure for the visitors and was rewarded with a late try, while fullback Junior Auru and forwards Wayne Barnett and Steve Farrelly never stopped trying.
Still in touch with the finals contenders, Burleigh travels to North Queensland in Round 14 where it will face the Young Guns at Dairy Farmers Stadium at 5.30pm on Saturday. Meanwhile, Central hosts Easts at Browne Park at 7.30pm on Saturday.
BURLEIGH 28 (Nick Parfitt, Martin Greise, John Flint, Kale Burton, Leigh Coghill tries; Nick Parfitt 4 goals) d CENTRAL 10 (Cody Gray, Nathaniel Bowman tries; Nathaniel Bowman goal) at Pizzey Park.
