Source: www.qrl.com.auUnbeaten in seven rounds, Tweed Heads has continued to surge up the Queensland Wizard Cup ladder with a 52-30 win against Wynnum Manly at the Piggabeen Complex.
However it may have come at a cost, with captain Andrew Moroney injuring his groin and placed in doubt for next Saturday's City Country match at BMD Kougari Oval.
As was the case with all matches this weekend, the score was tight at halftime, with the southerners one try ahead at 20-14.
As a matter of fact, it wasn't until the 70-minute mark that Tweed Heads cut loose, finally breaking a 36-30 standoff with a flurry of late tries.
While Tweed Heads moves to fourth, Wynnum Manly remains ninth on the ladder, although the Baysiders won admirers for a rugged performance.
"It was a fair battle. They really came at us," a relieved Tweed Heads coach Troy McCarthy said.
"After our run of wins there's definitely a confidence in our group, which is good. But in saying that we realise we haven't played the sides above us in a while.
"We're confident, but know where we are at if that makes sense."
McCarthy was most pleased with the playmaking duo of Brad Davis and Tim Maccan, architects of the half-century attacking spree.
He labelled Maccan and form front rower Chris Enahoro as two of the unluckiest players in missing selection for XXXX Country.
Meanwhile, after being featured on the cover of Rugby League News, James Wood showed he wasn't only photogenic, scoring a hat-trick of tries in the victory.
Wynnum winger Tangi Ropati matched the feat, doing his darnedest to secure a regular spot in Shane McNally's backline.
Also among the multiple scorers were Nathanael Barnes and Luke O'Dwyer, both of whom racked up doubles.
Barnes is now putting intense pressure on John Tamanika as the competition's leading tryscorer, while O'Dwyer is at long odds to remain in the Wizard Cup for much longer.
"I thought Luke was a standout and showed he belongs in the NRL," said McCarthy.
"Both of his tries came at crucial points for us and lifted the team when needed.
"He was pretty much a class above out there."
The next assignment for Tweed Heads comes on June 30 against Ipswich at Carrara Stadium. Wynnum Manly has three weeks of training before its next match on July 8 against Ipswich at BMD Kougari Oval.
TWEED HEADS 52 (James Wood 3, Nathanael Barnes 2, Luke O'Dwyer 2, Brad Davis, Selasi Berdie, Daniel Conn tries; Brad Davis 6 goals) d WYNNUM MANLY 30 (Tangi Ropati 3, Jim Ahmat, Denny Lambert, Michael Chaplain tries; Denny Lambert 3 goals) at the Piggabeen Complex.
