Source: www.qrl.com.auAs the rain poured from the heavens, the Ipswich Jets broke a long-standing drought, securing their first ever Spotless Club Championship with a 52-4 win over the Souths Logan Magpies.
Wizard Cup wooden spooners only last season, the Jets completed a remarkable turnaround by proving to be the strongest club across all grades in 2007, finishing on 266 points, overtaking Tweed Heads (253) on the final day of the season.
Points in the Club Championship are awarded on the basis of 10 points for a win in Wizard Cup, six for a win in FOGS Cup and four for victory in Colts.
Ipswich claimed fourth spot in the Wizard Cup, second in FOGS Cup and seventh in Colts.
Helping their top team to a strong win against the Magpies was super-impressive half Josh Lewis, relegated from the Gold Coast Titans.
Lewis nabbed two tries and was a constant thorn in Souths Logan's side with his clever options and dangerous kicking.
The NRL talent was on song from the kick-off, hoisting a bomb that caused a fumble from Magpies rookie Simon Sorbello, then going in to score the first 12 points of the game.
His opening try was a simple dive between two men, but his second was an eye-catcher, running 55m from the base of the scrum without a hand being laid on him.
Though marginally quieter in the second half, Lewis played a direct part in at least three more tries and then kicked a goal from the sideline after the final hooter.
Donald Malone ensured he also made the highlight reels, running 85m for a try straight after halftime and then scoring from a freakish play where Lewis kicked twice and Malone then slid 5m with the ball over the sodden turf.
In his 100th Wizard Cup appearance, Jason Bulgarelli crossed the white stripe as well, capping a year where he has gradually returned to his best form.
In total the Jets scored seven tries in the second half, chasing hard to catch third-placed Tweed Heads on the ladder.
But the task of winning by 80 was simply too large and Ipswich will now head into an elimination final against Easts next Saturday, 2pm at QLD Group Stadium.
Lewis is only eligible to play for the Jets as long as the Titans remain alive in the national league.
The weekend ends Souths Logan's seasons in all grades, despite the Magpies recording a 36-6 win in Colts.
The flogging in Wizard Cup was deceiving to a degree, with Souths Logan hardly touching the ball in the second half and appearing to have the upper hand for the first 20 minutes of the contest.
IPSWICH 52 (Josh Lewis 2, Donald Malone 2, Rickie Dodd 2, Jason Bulgarelli, Joel Reithmuller, Todd Riggs, Michael Ryan tries; Josh Lewis 6 goals) d SOUTHS LOGAN 4 (Christian Thompson try) at Davies Park.
