The biggest and more fierce rivalry in Rugby League was fought today with Hull FC edging out arch enemies Hull KR 22-14 in a classic clash at KC Stadium.
It was the first time in the Super League era that these two great clubs did battle against one another with Hull KR not in the top flight until this year.
When it comes to rivalry and hatred in the professional game, nothing tops the rivalry shared by Hull FC and Hull KR. Once the fixture list came out, supporters of both sides immediately hurried to get tickets for the occasion and a sell out crowd at KC Stadium was assured.
Hull FC started the match much stronger with loose forward Danny Tickle crossing over in the 7th minute and that was followed up with fullback Shaun Briscoe scoring 11 minutes later. Paul Cooke converted both tries for Hull KF to lead 12-0. Both tries came from elementry errors from a nervous Hull KR outfit Jon Goddard making the mistake allowing Gareth Raynor and Cooke to combine in setting up Tickle's try. Briscoe's try came when he darted over from close range following an error from Byron Ford.
The Robins needed points on the board before half-time and they got just that in the 34th minute with centre Luke Dyer touching down. Scott Murrell was unable to convert and the score remained 12-4 Hull FC's way going into the half-time break.
Matt Sing extended Hull FC's lead in the 59th minute when he backed up following a great 80m break from Motu Tony. Cooke was unable to convert as Hull FC led 16-4.
Hull KR substiture David Tangata-Toa got Hull KR back into the match when he crashed over on 54 minutes and Murrell's successful conversion brought the Robins within six points of their more fancied rivals.
Andreas Bauer brought the match to complete life when the Hull KR centre scored in the 61st minute. Murrell had the opportunity to convert, but his attempt was wide of the mark with Hull FC holding onto a slender two point lead.
Hull KR threw everything at their counterparts but the match was eventually sealed when Sid Domic crossed over in the final moments. Cooke converted with Hull FC emerging 22-14 victors in the 199th East v West clash with the West again emerging victors.
The 199th clash had been a long-time coming as Hull KR spent 11 years in the top flight wilderness. Even though the Robins lost the clash, they won plenty of respect with their effort against Hull FC after a massive slump in form following a promising start to the season.
Coaches comments from Peter Sharp and Justin Morgan will follow in this report.
