Salford crash to 10-try defeat against Warrington

Salford City Reds were left in serious relegation danger as they crashed to a 10-try defeat to Warrington Wolves in Cardiff.

The Reds were run ragged by the rampant Wolves in the penultimate match of the engage Super League's Millennium Magic weekend to fall three points adrift at the foot of the table.

Lee Briers orchestrated the Reds' downfall with an inspirational first-half display before Karl Harrison's side capitulated to concede six tries after the break.

Vinnie Anderson and Martin Gleeson finished with two tries apiece while Briers, much missed when injured recently, scored 10 points as the Wolves won for the first time since beating the same opposition a month ago.

Victory also lifted them into the top half but the prospects for the struggling Reds now look very different.

Warrington dominated from early on and helped themselves to four tries in the first half to open up an 18-6 lead at half-time.

Briers' goalkicking let him down, as he landed just three from his seven attempts all afternoon, but otherwise the stand-off was outstanding.

He almost put Anderson away in the eighth minute but the New Zealander was unable to cling onto a strong pass.

The opener was not long in coming, however, as a Briers' kick took a wicked bounce, jumped up to hit the crossbar and rebounded into the grateful arms of Paul Johnson in the ninth minute.

Briers tagged on the extras and then touched down himself four minutes later after accepting a gift from a wayward Simon Finnigan pass.

Briers and Johnson then combined to stretch the Salford defence again after gaining a lucky bounce but this time the Reds escaped.

It only proved a brief respite as Anderson found his way over from close range to make the score 14-0 with 22 minutes gone.

Salford's best move until then had ended when John Wilshere was pushed into touch by Gleeson but they finally got themselves on the scoreboard 12 minutes before the break.

In one of the best moves of the game, David Hodgson broke from deep and found support from Finnigan to send Luke Dorn in for a Wilshere-converted try.

It was a rare moment of quality from Salford but the Wolves finished the first half on top as Briers again broke clear to set up Henry Fa'afili in the corner.

Things got considerably worse for Salford after the restart as five more tries followed in quick succession.

Stuart Reardon began what became a procession as he shrugged off several challengers to finish off a strong move.

Gleeson claimed his first after a good handling move ended with a stroll to the line and he had a second moments later as he cut in from out wide.

A dreadful long pass by Dorn was then picked off by Richie Barnett for another simple score and then Anderson returned the resulting kick-off back upfield for a ninth try.

Salford did claw back some respectability with tries from Kevin McGuinness and Andrew Brocklehurst but the result had long since been put beyond doubt.

Jon Clarke ensured the Wolves would reach their half-century when he raced in late on. Briers, after allowing Ben Westwood to land two previous conversions, completed formalities from in front of the posts.
