The CFMEU Canberra Raiders were defeated 30-14 by a determined Newcastle Knights outfit on Saturday night, in a tough season opener at EnergyAustralia Stadium.
It was a sloppy season opener for the Raiders as dropped ball cost them plenty of good attacking opportunities, and created plenty of pressure on their own line.
The Raiders got off to a solid start against a stiff breeze at the Newcastle ground to score the first four pointer, but a failure to complete their sets of six tackles hurt the Green machine, as they went into the break down 10-4.
It was almost one-way traffic for the first 20 minutes of the second half as the Knights extended their lead to 18-4 with 19 minutes remaining, before two tries to Adrian Purtell bridged the gap to just four points with 10 minutes left.
But the Knights held their own to score two late tries and run away with the match and the first two competition points of the season.
NEWCASTLE KNIGHTS 30 (Danny Buderus, Kurt Gidley, Wes Naiqama, Cooper Vuna, Danny Wicks tries; Kurt Gidley 5 goals) defeated CANBERRA RAIDERS 14 (Adrian Purtell 2, Lincoln Withers tries; Todd Carney goal) at EnergyAustralia Stadium
Three days out from this Saturday's season opener against the Raiders, the Newcastle Knights have pre-sold 13,000 tickets, already exceeding 2007 crowd figures for the same match by 1,600.
The news comes as an early boost for the Knights with up to 20,000 people expected through the turnstiles if ticket sales continue at the current rate for what has been the lowest attended match in recent seasons.
The Newcastle Knights are reminding supporters PROticket is the 2008 agency for EnergyAustralia Stadium with tickets now available at participating registered clubs throughout Newcastle and the Hunter Valley.
Match day tickets are also available at the Knights Kingdom Supporter Store, online at www.PROticket.com.au or by calling 49 418 282.
