Broncos too good for Rabbitohs

The WOW Brisbane Broncos celebrated Anzac Day in style with a 32-18 victory over the South Sydney Rabbitohs at Suncorp Stadium last night.

After the commemoration formalities were over, doubles to youngsters Denan Kemp and Joel Moon (pictured) guided the Broncos to victory with a win coach Wayne Bennet described as a gutsy effort after several players could not finish the game.

As he did in the first half Denan Kemp opened the scoring in the second after great attacking play down the left hand side from the Broncos and Darius Boyd.

Kemp received an unselfish pass from Boyd and ran in under the posts to leave an easy conversion for Michael Ennis who put the home side in front 20-6 after 50 minutes.

Ennis then got one of his own less than three minutes later, after burrowing through four Bunny defenders.

He successfully converted his own try and Brisbane were up by 20 points.

With the game slipping away the Rabbits needed to score next, and they did through winger Nathan Merritt who pounced on a well executed grubber in the 63rd minute.

George Ndaira converted and the score closed to 26-12.

It was Ndaira who then set up Merrit's second try in ten minutes with a little bust up the middle.

The conversion took the visitors tally to 18, but left them 8 points behind with five minutes to go.

The Broncos weren't done yet, and on the stroke of full-time Joel Moon crossed for his second.

After Ennis's successful conversion the final score saw the Broncos victorious 32-18.

Young centre Steve Michaels lasted less than five minutes before being stretchered off with a season ending right knee injury thanks to a strong Nigel Vagana tackle.

With his first touch of the game replacement Moon stood the defence up before releasing Kemp in to the corner to open the Broncos account.

A scrum feed against the head in the 13th minute consolidated with a first-tackle penalty gave the Broncos good field position.

Another penalty followed and Ennis successfully kicked it to put the Broncos six points in front after a quarter of an hour.

The usual suspects of Tonie Carroll, Ashton Sims and Sam Thaiday were landing the big hits, with Ben Hannant doing a lot of work up front.

Hannant was almost rewarded with a try in the 21st minute, but was denied after David Stagg was penalised for holding Merritt back.

It took just two minutes before the Broncos got there second through 'super sub' Moon.

The conversion was unsuccessful and the Broncos led 10-0 after 24 minutes.

The Rabbitohs weren't going to lie down and responded five minutes later with their first coming through big second rower David Fa'Alogo.

Isaac Luke converted and visitors were within four points with 10 minutes to go in the half.

Justin Hodges was soon in on the action, showing little signs of the flu which had seen him start on the bench, by scoring in the 35th minute to extend the Broncos lead out to eight.

Ennis uncharacteristically missed for the third time and the Broncos went in to the shed up 14-6 at the half.

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have one of the richest histories in Rugby League. Established in 1908, the South Sydney Club has won 20 first grade premierships and provided 62 internationals for the Australian side, and have famously worn their cardinal red and myrtle green colours since inception. The rebirth of the Rabbitohs began on 7 June, 2006 through a new partnership between Russell Crowe, Peter Holmes a Court and the then 8000 Members of the Club. The Rabbitohs made the semi-finals for the first time in 18 years in 2007, and have strengthened their season ticketed Membership to over 6,500 with over 12,000 total members in 2008.
