The WOW Brisbane Broncos have had to overcome a scare from the Wests Tigers in Sydney tonight before gaining a victory that has put them on top of the ladder.
The 34-22 win and the loss of the Gold Coast Titans to Newcastle has the Broncos now perched at the head of the NRL.
While the two points were secured, the performance disappointed Wayne Bennett as the team let the Tigers back into the match.
The Broncos led 16-0 at halftime but they gave some of that back almost straight away when Tigers forward Ben Teo crashed his way over.
Brett Hodgson kicked the goal and it was back to 16-6.
But 12 minutes into the second half the 16-point lead was restored after some silky skills from Sam Thaiday.
Thaiday juggled a long pass from Darren Lockyer and turned his back on the defence, managing to slip a deft one-handed pass to Karmichael Hunt, who sliced through to score.
Peter Wallace goaled and it was 22-6.
But the Tigers would not wilt, Teo going over for his second when Bronco Joel Moon knocked the ball out in a tackle and it fell into Teo's hands to score.
When Hodgson potted from the corner the Broncos were only ahead by 10 with 19 minutes to play.
The Tigers then got to within four points when Shannon McDonnell scored in the corner, Moon almost holding him up before another Tiger arrived to help his teammate plant it.
The Broncos missed a great opportunity to break away again when Moon couldn't control a pass from Denan Kemp who had run onto a Lockyer chip
But the Broncos gave themselves some breathing space when Reece Robinson (pictured) provided a good finish to beat Chris Lawrence cold and score out wide.
Ennis kicked the goal and the Broncos were up by 10 with five minutes remaining.
Wallace then scored on a late movement before the Tigers went over on the bell to make it 34-22.
The Broncos had been denied in the 3rd minute when video referee Bill Harrigan ruled Kemp had taken a player out before Darius Boyd scored a try.
The Tigers had all the pressure on but the Broncos struck first after a long break by Peter Wallace.
The Broncos threw the ball around inside the Tigers 10 metre zone and eventually found winger Reece Robinson unmarked.
Ennis missed the goal and it was 4-0.
A piece of Kemp brilliance put the Broncos on the board again.
Lockyer had fired a long but low pass towards him and the former Australian junior soccer player controlled the ball with his foot before toeing it ahead and winning the race to the pill.
Ennis landed a lovely conversion and it was 10-0 after 20 minutes.
Five minutes later the Broncos had built a nice lead when after another long string of passes big Sam Thaiday bullocked his way over from close range.
Ennis again landed and it was 16-0, a lead the Broncos kept until halftime.

Wests Tigers prop Todd Payten has called on the Wests Tigers army of fans to be out in force for the match against Brisbane Broncos at ANZ Stadium on Saturday, May 3, at 8.30pm.
"Brisbane is one of the form teams of the competition and we know we will be in for a very tough match,'' Payten said.
"I'm glad the match is our home game and not up there in Brisbane. I know I am speaking on behalf of the rest of the team when I say we need as many Wests Tigers supporters there as possible to help lift us against the Broncos.
"The support we received in the win over Cronulla last Sunday was incredible. I know we were the away team but to be honest, I think there were more Wests Tigers supporters then than Sharks fans.
"Our fans really lifted us in the second half and it inspired us.
"If we can get those Wests Tigers fans who were at Cronulla to be at ANZ Stadium on Saturday night, it could well make the difference again."
Rleague.com reports that Justin Hodges is out for the Broncos for the clash against the Wests Tigers, but they have been boosted by the return of Karmichael Hunt.
