Eels do enough to down Cowboys
Sat July 26, 2008
Source: www.parraeels.com.au

The Pirtek Parramatta Eels have returned to the NRL winners circle with a dour yet effective 16-4 victory over the North Queensland Cowboys at Parramatta Stadium.

In a match lacking in highlights two early tries proved to be enough for the Eels, who picked up their first win since a two point victory over Melbourne in round 16.

With temperatures well into single figures and intermittent rain falling just 7,253 of the Eels faithful turned out to see their side move onto 20 competition points, the win keeping Parramatta's finals hopes alive with six regular season matches now left to play.

It was also a night of double celebration with the Eels Toyota Cup side also tasting victory for the first time since round 16, defeating the Cowboys 28-18.

Luke Burt was a late addition to the Eels side and it took just four minutes to make his return to the NRL a memorable one, touching down for the Eels first try off a Brett Finch grubber.

Burt's conversion gave the Eels a 6-nil lead, which was stretched to 8-nil when the fullback added a penalty goal on 11 minutes.

He then provided the spark for the Eels second try, a neat kick in behind the line resulting in a repeat set for the home side.

With the Cowboys defence stretched some quick thinking from Nathan Hindmarsh at dummy half put Tony Williams away on the short side, the try and subsequent conversion making it 14-nil to the Eels.

The Cowboys hit back on the half hour through a try to winger John Williams, reducing the Eels lead to 10 points, which is where it stayed until well into the second half.

The Cowboys looked most likely to score after the resumption, enjoying multiple sets on the Eels line as well as being referred to video referee Chris Ward on two separate occasions in the 15 minutes after the break.

However time and again the Eels goal line defence held firm, which later proved to be the overriding theme of the second half as the Cowboys dominated possession for no result.

The early part of the second half was also notable for the First Grade debut of Eel number 704, replacement forward Broderick Wright getting through a mountain of work after being thrust into the fray soon after the break.

First - and ultimately, last - points of the second half came after what seemed an eternity, Burt kicking a penalty goal 11 minutes from full time to take the Eels lead out to two converted tries.

There it stayed, the Eels back in the swing of things ahead of a round 21, Monday night football date with Newcastle at EnergyAustralia Stadium.
