Junior Warriors beaten in NYC debut by Storm
Mon March 17, 2008
Source: www.warriors.co.nz

A sensational start wasn't enough to take the Vodafone Junior Warriors to victory in their National Youth Competition (NYC) debut against Melbourne at the Telstra Dome tonight (Monday).

The match was barely a minute old when halfback Jody Henry put NRL squad member Sonny Fai through on an irresistible run to the line.

It seemed the Tony Iro-coached side was in the mood to make a real impression.

But the Vodafone Junior Warriors conceded five tries in the opening 42 minutes to allow their under-20 opponents to lead 26-14 before they eventually won 32-22.

The visiting side wasn't without plenty of opportunities to win, though.

They quickly recovered from the 12-point deficit in the second half with an Isaac John try and then another to winger Ray Wallace. While both conversions were missed, it had become a 22-26 battle.

The Vodafone Junior Warriors pressed but couldn't quite bring Fai into the game often enough.

After scoring the opening try he scored another off Henry once again in the 31st minute and also had a hand in centre Rusty Bristow's try.

Melbourne weathered the storm, so to speak, and struck back with a try of its own and a second for winger Malo Feterika to take a 10-point lead.

It ultimately proved enough but not before the Vodafone Junior Warriors searched for another comeback.

They were, however, affected by modest goal-kicking success with Kevin Locke and Scott Jones managing just one success from five attempts between them.

Match details:

At Telstra Dome, Melbourne:
Vodafone Junior Warriors 22 (Sonny Fai 2, Rusty Bristow, Isaac John, Ray Wallace tries; Kevin Locke conversion).
Melbourne Storm 32 (Joseph Tomane 2, Malo Feterika 2, Trent Walker, Zeb Tawha tries; Joseph Tomane 4 conversions).
Halftime: 22-14 Storm.
Referee: Alan Shortall.
