Central Comets five-eighth Guy Williams says a "bit of rivalry" and better attitude lifted his side to a solid Wizard Cup victory over the Mackay Cutters.
Smacked by 38 points the previous week, the Comets rebounded in style with a solid 18-12 victory over the Cutters at the Mackay Junior Fields on Saturday night.
"Probably just the attitude was better," Williams said.
"Because we were playing Mackay, there was a bit of rivalry there as well."
The Comets normally travel by plane to away games but on Saturday the team boarded a bus for the road trip from Rockhampton to Mackay.
The three and a half hour bus trip didn't take any sting out of the Comets.
"We had lost three in a row and the guys didn't want to go in that downward spiral," Williams said.
"We wanted to turn it around."
Turn it around they did.
The Comets led 12-0 at half-time courtesy of tries to Marty Hatfield and Shanan Wood.
The visitors went further in front in the second half when Luke Fatnowna crossed for the Comets' third try of the evening.
The conversion put Central in front 18-0 and well on its way to victory.
Mackay scored two late tries but never threatened to run down the Comets, who are now just three points adrift of fifth-placed Redcliffe.
Central can edge even closer to Redcliffe with a round 11 victory against the Dolphins at Rockhampton's Browne Park on Saturday.
Williams said the Comets had historically produced strong performances at home against the Wizard Cup heavyweights.
The Comets have already won two matches at home this year and a third on Saturday night would give the Rockhampton team's top five prospects a massive kick in the right direction.
Meanwhile, the Cutters will look to get their season back on track when they make the trip to Cudgen to play Tweed Heads.
The Cutters will need to find a more consistent performance against the revitalised Tweed.
Hard working pair Kerrod Toby and Jamie McDonald slugged it forward all match for Cutters in the match against Central.
But apart from the last five minutes when the Cutters roared to life with two quick tries, there was little enterprise or flair shown by the competition newcomers.
