Cutters held to draw Sun May 25, 2008 Source: www.qrl.com.au
"We should have won."
With those four words, Mackay player/coach Shane Muspratt summed up a bittersweet moment for the Cutters.
While pleased to take something out of the long trip to Tweed Heads, Muspratt was disappointed at having to share the points with the Seagulls following the thrilling 26-26 draw at Ned Byrne Field.
Leading 26-24 with three minutes remaining, Muspratt thought his team had Saturday's round 11 match in the bag.
But a slice of magic from quick thinking Tweed five-eighth Brad Davis rescued the wobbly Seagulls.
Davis took a punt by opting for a short goal-line drop out in the dying minutes. The gamble worked, with Tweed retrieving the ball and surging up the field for a chance to win the game.
Tweed was awarded a penalty late in the tackle count, and rather than chancing their arm for a knock-out try, Davis opted to take the points with a penalty kick.
Tweed had one last shot at the Cutters following the re-start but couldn't break the deadlock, unlike last week when Davis kicked a field goal to sink the Jets.
Muspratt felt the Cutters let a golden opportunity slip by not closing out the game when they forced Tweed to make a drop out from deep inside their own territory.
"If we didn't fall asleep we win the game right there," Muspratt said.
Sione Faumuina and Shane Tronc produced strong performances for the Cutters but it was rookie hooker Luke Srama who deservedly received the accolades after the match.
Srama, who was plucked from the local Mackay competition where he plays with Souths, was named players' player.
Muspratt, whose short kicking game resulted in two tries for the Cutters, was thrilled to see Srama make the most of the opportunity.
Chris Giumelli continued his strong form for the Cutters with two neat tries on the flanks, while Dean Tass also bagged a double for the visitors.
