Boom centre Karl Johnson has capped off a wonderful week by crossing for the match-winning try for the Central Comets in their brilliant 28-26 victory over the Redcliffe Dolphins.
Johnson, who was named in the Queensland Country side last Monday, completed a slick movement to score the try which sealed the Comets a memorable victory over the Dolphins at Browne Park on Saturday.
The try sent Comets supporters into a frenzy and left shattered Redcliffe players slumped on the turf in a state of disbelief.
Redcliffe had led the match 26-24 and even Comets utility star Nat Bowman thought his team had done its dash after surrendering a big half-time lead.
"I thought I was going to be walking off the field with my head down but the boys dug deep," a relieved Bowman said.
Bowman was delighted to see match-winner Johnson named in the Queensland Country side earlier in the week.
He was perhaps even a touch happier when he watched Johnson cross the line for his second try of the match.
"That's (Country) a big reward for him," Bowman said of the powerful centre.
"He's been playing really well for us."
Despite being written off by many as potential wooden-spooners, the Comets continue to surprise and are now just one win off fifth spot.
The Comets paved the way for their latest win by skipping away to a 24-10 lead by half-time.
But Redcliffe clicked into stride in the second half and posted three tries to grab the lead. What followed will live long in the memories of the Comets players and supporters.
"Luckily for us we shifted the ball out wide and Karl Johnson scored," Bowman said.
"I'm pretty sure that's the first time I've played in a team that has beaten Redcliffe. I can't remember the last time the Comets have beaten Redcliffe."
