The Easts Tigers may have overcome the Burleigh Bears 26-10 today, but there won't be too many smiles at Tigers headquarters after Wade Liddell suffered a leg injury which could sideline him for at least six weeks.
The loss of Liddell adds to a huge injury list for the wounded Tigers.
The match at Pizzey Park was always going to be a physical affair, particularly after Easts lost to Burleigh in round one despite scoring more tries.
Burleigh coach Jimmy Lenihan was furious with his side's performance.
"It was really ordinary," said Lenihan when asked how his team went.
"We dropped too much ball and we beat ourselves really."
In Burleigh's first three sets of the match, they dropped the ball three times, all on tackles one and two.
No wonder Lenihan was annoyed.
"I'm disappointed for sure. I don't know if it's an attitude thing but the guys have been training well and then they turn up today and don't even give themselves a shot at winning."
Despite Burleigh's woes, the score was just 10-4 with 20 minutes to go. But then Easts turned the pressure on and made a number of breaks to wrap the game up.
Easts Tigers coach Darren Smith said his team simply made the most of their chances.
"Liam Campbell made a few breaks at the end there and we just capitalised on our opportunities," Smith said.
"That was the difference really."
Prop Fabian Soutar led the way for Easts, imposing his large frame through the middle of the ruck all match.
"He is new to the club and he started off in FOGS but we gave him an opportunity and he has made the most of it," Smith said.
Despite the defeat, Burleigh had a host of well performed forwards.
"Our prop, Travis Simpson, was the best for us. The whole pack tried very hard out there but just couldn't find a way through," Lenihan said.
EASTS TIGERS 26 (Liam Campbell, Kev Stephensen, Jason Connors, Trent Henrick, Nathan Pill tries; Trent Henrick 2, Matt Lockyer goals) def BURLEIGH BEARS 4 (Aseri Laing try) at Pizzey Park.
