Souths Logan has survived a spirited fightback from the Central Comets to record a fifth-straight Wizard Cup victory.
The league leading Magpies were expected to easily account for the Comets at Meakin Park on Saturday.
But the Magpies were stretched to near breaking point on numerous occasions by the willing Comets, who came tantalisingly close to registering one of the upsets of the season.
With seven minutes left, the home side was clinging to a 28-24 lead.
Magpies coach Paul Bramley conceded the resurgent Comets were "pounding us".
But a late try from giant forward Tom Learoyd-Lahrs sealed Souths Logan's 10th win of the season and their standing at the top of the Wizard Cup ladder.
"They didn't play that bad," Bramley said of the Comets.
"I tried to warn the boys that they play a grafting, spoiling game. And a couple of their tries were well constructed."
"They set up plays and beat us."
Shea Moylan crossed for a double for the Magpies, one of three teams in contention for the coveted minor premiership.
Despite having the best win/loss record in the competition, Bramley isn't about to take the foot off the pedal.
The Magpies coach spent time at Pizzey Park today watching the Tweed Heads Seagulls in action against the Burleigh Bears.
Souths Logan is drawn to play the Seagulls next weekend in a crucial game for both sides.
Bramley would dearly love to have star fullback Quentin Laulu Togagae on the park for the round 15 match.
Laulu Togagae suffered a cork in the win over the Comets.
"Fingers crossed he'll be right," Bramley said.
"He didn't come back out after half-time. We missed 'Q' in that second half."
Bramley was pleased to see high profile Canberra Raiders pair Learoyd-Lahrs and Neville Costigan leave their mark on the game.
Costigan, who has battled a quad tear all season, played 40 minutes.
"He was starting to find some form out there too," Bramley said of the former Queensland Maroons star.
Learoyd-Lahrs produced some big plays, although he did come up with a couple of errors while "trying some things".
