Slippery Burleigh halves Murray Emmerson and Brent McConnell capitalised on a dominant display from their big men today as the Bears smacked Tweed Heads 43-24 at Pizzey Park.
With giant prop Wayne Phillis leading from the front, the Bears led from start to finish to all but end Tweed's faint finals hopes.
Tweed, the 2007 premiers, have now slipped five points out of fifth place and would need to put together a remarkable winning sequence to figure in this year's play-offs.
In front of a huge crowd, Tweed's afternoon got off to a horror start when they conceded the opening three tries.
To make matters worse, their best forward - the hard-working Luke Swain - spent a large slice of the first half off the field in the blood bin after a receiving a nasty cut on the chin.
At 18-0 in front, Burleigh appeared on track to rack up a cricket score in the local derby.
But the Seagulls hit back just before half-time with two quick tries from young gun Luke Dumas.
Brad Davis added the extras on both occasions to keep the visitors in touch.
Tweed kept coming in the second half, but Burleigh always seemed to be a step ahead of their coastal rivals.
Young halfback Emmerson had another superb outing for the Bears, who were also well served by the experienced McConnell.
Emmerson scored a try and slotted a late field to put the result well and truly beyond doubt.
"He's really blossomed as a player," Burleigh CEO Adrian Vowles said of the Burleigh junior.
The victory came at just the right time for the Bears, who now share fourth place with the Wynnum Manly Seagulls.
"It's probably the best we've played this year I think," Vowles said.
Along with Emmerson and McConnell, Cowboys signing Scott Smith caused plenty of headaches for Tweed's star-studded forward pack.
The 19-point victory capped off a fine day for the Bears, who also won the Colts and FOGS matches.
