Source: www.qrl.com.auThe Ipswich Jets are celebrating an historic minor premiership and a string of records following Saturday's 62-10 thrashing of the Tweed Heads Seagulls at Briggs Road.
High-flying Ipswich is now assured of top spot, no matter what happens in the final round clash against the Northern Pride in Cairns next weekend.
The minor premiership meant a great deal for emotional Jets skipper Danny Coburn, who pumped his fist with delight at full-time and led a stirring rendition of the club's victory song.
But those scenes and the record scoreline never looked on the cards in the opening minutes of Saturday's clash.
The Jets bumbled and fumbled their way through the first 20 minutes.
Tweed's Chris Enahoro scored after just 55 seconds. The try came after the Seagulls gathered the ball from their own kick off.
But the Jets gradually wore down the away side before unleashing a devastating burst which netted four tries in 12 minutes.
Classy hooker Michael Ryan led the charge. The former Bronco got the ball rolling for the Jets with a try of his own before another dart from dummy half resulted in a spectacular four-pointer to rampaging forward Leigh Coghill.
From that point on it was all one way traffic, with Donald Malone notching a double before half-time and Scott Ireland getting in on the act after wonderful lead up work from Ian Lacey and Malone.
Crowd favourite Malone thrilled fans in the second half when he crossed for a further three tries to finish with five for the match.
The stunning haul set a new try-scoring record in a match for the Jets. The 62-10 victory was also Ipswich's biggest winning margin in the history of the Queensland Cup.
Not surprisingly, it was Tweed's biggest defeat and one that Seagulls coach Mick Woods never saw coming.
Woods and Tweed supporters were confident of putting a dent in Ipswich's premiership campaign after their 46-22 victory over Wynnum Manly the previous week.
But the Seagulls collapsed against a rampant Jets outfit.
Tweed's prospects of an upset nosedived in the fourth minute when star five-eighth Brad Davis was hit in a heavy tackle from Matt McPhee.
The contact forced a groggy Davis from the field for the remainder of the match.
The Jets' medical team was also working overtime. Big prop Aaron Sweeney was carried from the field late in the second half with a suspected neck problem.
But in good news for Sweeney and Ipswich fans, the fiery red head appeared to be in no discomfort after the game.
Sweeney took part in the victory celebrations and is hopeful of being fit for the final round clash against the Pride at Barlow Park.
Saturday's victory means the Jets are just one victory away from a grand final berth. The Jets will have the first weekend of the finals off before playing the winner of second versus third semi-final.
IPSWICH JETS 62 (Donald Malone 5, Scott Ireland 2, Michael Ryan 2, Kurtis Lingwoodock, Leigh Coghill, Jason Bulgarelli tries; Scott Ireland 3, Donald Malone 3, Trevor Exton goals) def TWEED HEADS 10 (James Wood, Chris Enahoro tries; Ben Jeffery goal) at Briggs Rd.
