The Toyota Cup Sharks were gallant in defeat, stretching the highly rated Penrith Panthers before going down by 22 points to 14 in their round six match played at Toyota Stadium.
The Sharks led 8-0 early after two tries, before two converted tries by the Panthers put the visitors up 12-8 at the break.
After Penrith stretched their lead to 18-8 in the opening stages of the second stanza, the Sharks battled their way back with a try to Nathan Stapleton, converted from the sideline, to make it just a four poitn margin, however the Panthers scored late to secure the win.
The game for the Toyota Cup Sharks was the first with new coach Tony Herman in charge after Jim Dymock moved to the Bulldogs to take an NRL assistants role.
