The St George Illawarra Dragons Toyota Cup side have today recorded their sixthe straight victory 24-4 over the Roosters at ANZ Stadium.
The Dragons were in the lead 6-4 at half-time and burst away in the second stanza scoring three second half tries.
The side was boosted by the return of Lagi Setu who was omitted from the NRL side and started the match in the back row.
The Dragons opened the scoring in the 16th minute of the match after back to back penalties put them in a commanding position. The first came after the Roosters were offside from a cross kick and the second against hooker Jake Friend for holding down Kyle Stanley too long in the play the ball. From the set of six the Dragons attacked the Roosters line and on the last a grubber through by Stanley towards the uprights caught the fullback napping and John Kennedy scored under the posts. Matt Mundine easily converted to take the lead 6-nil.
Just three minutes later the Roosters answered back through five-eighth Tom Symonds. The visitors earned a penalty on half-way which put them in a good attacking position. Symonds simply took the ball to the line and slipped through the gap to score out wide in the north-western corner. The conversion attempt was unsuccessful and the Dragons held on to a slender two point lead as the sides went to the half time break.
After the break the Dragons were able to score two tries in six minutes to open the lead up. Both tries were scored by Kennedy to notch up his hat-trick for the afternoon. The first of the tries was off the back of a Sam Morath bust who passed the ball inside to Kennedy to score under the posts. On this occasion Morath took the conversion to take the lead out to 12-4.
The second was just a simple show and go close to the line and he slipped through to score 10m to the left of the uprights. Morath again converted to extend the lead to 18-4.
In the 63rd minute the Dragons again scored but on this occasion front row forward Trent Merrin charged over from close range to score. Off the back of a Roosters injury which stopped play for a number of minutes the red and whites made their way forward and scored next to the left hand upright. On this occasion it was Daniel Fepuleai converted and the lead was now 20, 24-4.
The Roosters claimed a consolation try in the closing stages through Martin Kennedy. The visitors simply had the numbers and crossed out wide on the western side. Ben Cronin converted to end the match at 24-10.
