Wigan thrash Haven in the Cup
Tue May 13, 2008

Wigan progressed with ease to the Quarter Finals of the Carnegie Challenge Cup with a convincing 106-8 win over National League side Whitehaven at the JJB Stadium on Monday night.

Debutant scrum half Sam Tomkins grabbed a hat-trick in the opening 12 minutes and went on to score twice again in the second half to score five tries in his first appearance at senior level. The Cumbrians simply had no answer as the home side scored at will, 42-0 in the opening 20 minutes with seven tries without reply.

Wigan scored 18 tries in total with Pat Richards hitting 17 goals from 18 attempts.

The Warriors will now travel to Leeds in the last 8 of the competition, the draw made just before this evenings game.

It took the Warriors just two minutes to break the deadlock with big prop Iafeta Paleaaesina crashing over from a short Andy Coley pass under the posts. Richards added the extras, 6-0.

Just two minutes later and it was debutant Sam Tomkins with the Warriors second try, Coley again involved with the break, Carmont on his outside and the 19 year old Tomkins was there in support to race away for the four points. Richards goal made it 12-0.

On the next attack Tomkins was in support once more for his second try, this time Pat Richards away from the Haven defence. The winger made it three from three, 18-0 with just 8 minutes gone.

It was almost try number four on 9 minutes but Phil Bailey's pass to Goulding was after he had been tackled just inches away from the Cumbrians try line.

Sam Tomkins completed his hat-trick on 12 minutes, from a scrum O'Loughlin with a short pass for the try, Richards struck the goal, 24-0.

On 14 minutes, Wigan were in for try number five, Goulding with the break from a Bailey pass and Barrett was away for his first try of the season, The goal was added 30-0.

The procession of tries continued as Whitehaven were cut open again this time Sean O'Loughlin with the try on 17 minutes, Richards again was spot on, 36-0.

On 20 it was try number seven, Mickey Higham with the dummy and he was able to cross unopposed. Richards continued his 100% accuracy, 42-0.

There was at least a try to cheer for the visiting fans on 25 minutes when a Carl Rudd kick was seized upon by Ade Adebisi for the try. The goal attempt was missed, 42-4.

Sam Tomkins turned into try provider on 32 minutes sending Harrison Hansen in from 5 metres out. Richards goal made it 48-4.

Full credit to the visitors who got their second try as the half time hooter sounded, good hands and it was Rob Jackson with the touchdown, again the goal was missed, at the interval the score was 48-8.

Straight from the kick off and Wigan were in again, Harrison Hansen with his second of the night and the Warriors 9th, with the goal it made it 54-8.

On 43 it was the turn of Mark Calderwood to score from a long Barrett pass, this time the extras were missed 58-8.

On 58, Sam Tomkins got his 4th try, a great dummy close to the line, Richards struck the conversion, 64-8. Soon after Barrett grabbed his second to go in under the sticks and again Pat Richards converted, 70-8. Barrett grabbed his hat-trick on 65 minutes, Richards goal, 76-8.

Unbelievably Sam Tomkins with some great work scored his 5th and Wigan's 14th on 67 minutes, the goal from Richards, 82-8.

Calderwood got his second and the goal made it 88-8 and there was still time for Pat Richards to score a try from a cross field kick, he added the goal, 94-8.

Phil Bailey try on 77 brough the score to 98-8 and his excellent conversion brought up the 100. There was stiill more to come as Paleaaesina got his second and Richards added the goal, 17 from 18 attempts. It finished 106-8.

Wigan v Whitehaven Challenge Cup details announced
Wed April 30, 2008
Source: www.wiganwarriors.com

Wigan Warriors can today confirm that their fifth round Carnegie Challenge Cup fixture against Whitehaven will take place on Monday 12th May, kicking off at 7.30pm at the JJB Stadium.

The match has been moved from the weekend with the consent of both the Whitehaven Club and the RFL. The change has arisen because of the media spotlight on the match between Wigan Athletic and Manchester United which is scheduled to take place on Sunday afternoon in front of a worldwide TV audience and is likely to decide the FA Premiership Title.

Following recent unfounded media criticism of the JJB Stadium pitch directed at Rugby League and the potential worldwide media disaster for Rugby League if it rained on the Friday night and damage was caused to the pitch before Sunday's high-profile game, the Wigan Chairman, Ian Lenagan, decided not to play the match on the Friday night to protect the reputation of both Wigan Warriors and Wigan Athletic as well as the town of Wigan and sport of Rugby League.

Wigan Rugby League Chairman Ian Lenagan explained,

"Dave Whelan and I were in complete agreement that the Challenge Cup game should not be played on Friday for the reasons given.

"The Club has been working tirelessly since the draw was made last Tuesday to find the most appropriate alternative venue and time for this fixture. Our choices in priority order were at Orrell on Saturday afternoon, the JJB Stadium on Monday night, at another local club on Saturday afternoon or, finally, away at Whitehaven on Saturday. The RFL would have had to rule if agreement between the two clubs could not be reached.

"The Edge Hall Road Stadium at Orrell would have been a good compromise choice to host occasional fixtures of this nature but the shortage of time to deal with safety, traffic, parking and other issues and to consult properly with residents and other authorities eventually precluded this option. However, a great deal of useful time and effort has been invested during the past week which will be directed to attempt to bring Orrell up to the appropriate standard for occasional future matches.

"Another option open to the Club to allow the fixture to be played locally was to play at Hilton Park in Leigh. The Wigan Club would like to thank Leigh Centurions for their assistance when we investigated this option.

"Reversing the fixture to play it at Whitehaven was considered but the Wigan Club, supported by the RFL, was keen to ensure that the game was played within the Wigan boundaries, as drawn, so that Warriors supporters could attend the game.

"Wigan Warriors would like to thank the Whitehaven Board and Officials for agreeing to the Monday night change which is not ideal for either club but is the best practical and financial compromise in these circumstances."

The Club can also announce that supporters of both clubs will be able to gain admission to this match at discounted prices. Only the East and West Stands will be open and general admission prices are 14 for adults and 7 for concessions.

There are further discounts for both Wigan and Whitehaven season ticket holders. Tickets will be priced at 12 for adults, 6 for over 60's and students, and 1 for juniors Under 16 when pre-purchasing before 2pm on Saturday 10th May.

Tickets go on sale on Wednesday (30th April) and current Warriors season ticket holders will have until next Tuesday (6th May) at 5pm to secure their reserved seat. Any season ticket holder seats that haven't been purchased will be released for general sale at 9am the following day (Wednesday 7th May).

Tickets are available from the JJB Stadium Ticket Office and the Ticket Hotline on 0871 66-33-552 while Whitehaven fans will be able to purchase tickets from the Recreation Ground in due course.
