Castleford stage stunning comeback to upset Warrington

Basement boys Castleford Tigers mounted a spirited fightback to see off Warrington Wolves at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

The Wolves threw away a 28-18 lead with only 10 minutes remaining as the Tigers raced over for three tries in four minutes from Michael Wainwright, Luke Dorn and Stuart Donlan.

Warrington's misery was completed when Aussie Dorn intercepted Michael Monaghan's pass to race almost the full length of the field in the last minute.

Basement boys Cas deservedly led 14-10 at half-time before the Wolves hit back - only to toss away victory.

Warrington, whose last away win was a 34-31 victory at Castleford in March, went into the clash missing only Rob Parker apart from long-term casualties Chris Bridge, Stuart Reardon, Paul Wood and Paul Johnson.

Castleford were without first-choice half-backs Anthony Thackeray and Aussie Brent Sherwin with Ryan McGoldrick and Dorn switching positions to plug the gap.

Cas were still searching for their first away win since returning to the top flight with their four points from shock home victories against pace-setters Leeds and St Helens.

Strong-running centre Michael Shenton caused problems from the start for Warrington who were relieved video ref Ben Thaler disallowed a Peter Lupton try from a towering McGoldrick kick.

Wolves' joy was short-lived with Donlan brushing off Chris Riley with ease for 18-year-old Richard Owen to cross in the corner after only five minutes.

Cas piled on the pressure and on their first raid Riley was bundled into touch on the second tackle.

It was no surprise when Cas grabbed the second try with Shenton taking Joe Westerman's pass to go over.

Westerman added the touchline conversion to make it 10-0 before a touch of class from Vinnie Anderson finally opened Warrington's account after 25 minutes with his solo try converted by Chris Hicks.

The Wolves drew level almost immediately with Riley collecting a perfectly-judged Lee Briers kick to force his way over in the corner.

Warrington would have gone ahead for the first time had Martin Gleeson not spilled Monaghan's pass with the line open following a surging Briers break.

It proved costly with Cas ahead 14-10 at the interval after Westerman and Shenton again combined for Adam Fletcher to squeeze over in the corner.

Smart passing from Monaghan and Hicks enabled Riley to bag his second try, converted by Hicks, to make it 16-14 before Cas were reduced to 12 men with Ned Catic sin-binned for interference.

Monaghan's long pass immediately sent Kevin Penny scooting over with Hicks' conversion easing the Wolves' nerves at 22-14.

Catic was still absent when Hicks raced over for his 15th try of the season before Wainwright cut the gap to 28-18.

Then Dorn and Donlan went over with Westerman and Craig Huby tagging on the conversions to sink Warrington.

Dorn's second try added the final insult, and there was more misery as Penny left the field on a stretcher in the last minute.
