Rleague Interview: Ireland Lock Simon Finnigan Thu November 6, 2008 Ireland have run out convincing 34-16 winners against Samoa to advance through to the Qualifying Final against Fiji and one of their best performers was lock forward Simon Finnigan, who scored a try and got through a mountain of work.
Finnigan backed up a break on the inside to score Ireland's try and produced a strong all-round performance as Ireland upset Samoa to advance through to the next round where they'll take on Fiji with the winner to play Australia in the Semi Final.
Finnigan said it was a tough game and he was over the moon that Ireland got the points. A lot of people written off Ireland, but Finnigan was confident that Ireland would get up on top.
The victory by Ireland will be a massive boost for Irish Rugby League according to Finnigan and if they can overcome Fiji it would put Rugby League on the map in Ireland.
When asked about a European Cup Finnigan said it would be excellent for the game, but wondered whether England would be in favour of such a concept.
Finnigan said that the World Cup has been a roller coaster ride and that the team spirit is unbelievable. Finnigan said that no one expected Ireland to progress this far in the World Cup and will be taking each game as it comes.
Finnigan this year played for Bradford in the Super League competition and next year will be transferring to Huddersfield where he'll be coached by Nathan Brown. Finnigan said that he's excited to be coached by Brown and said that he did pretty well at the Dragons.
