Tue March 17, 2009 Source: NRL Stats: Warriors 26 v Eels 18The Warriors overcame a tragic pre-season to defeat Parramatta 26-18 in front of over 20,000 fans at Mt Smart Stadium in Auckland. Unfortunately the pre-season for the Warriors was most tragic with the drowning of boom talent Sonny Fai after trying to save the lives of family and friends around him a day before training post Christmas resumed. It was also a night of celebration on top of remembrance with captain Steve Price celebrating 300 first grade games. He's just the 11th player in NSWRL/NRL history to do so and the first from Queensland to achieve the milestone. Ruben Wiki achieved his 300th game when at the Warriors last year, although Wiki and Price had long stints at rival clubs. Leading 18-6 at the break the Warriors extended that lead to 26-6 in the opening ten minutes of the second half before two tries in the next ten minutes got the Eels roaring back into contention with 20 minutes remaining. Price led the way for the Warriors topping the hit ups and metres whereas Nathan Hindmarsh worked himself to a stand-still with 47 tackles. NEW ZEALAND WARRIORSPositive: The Warriors overcame a very tough pre-season and emotional build up to the game to produce an outstanding first half performance. Price continues to show that he's playing like a good drop of wine. Negative: The fact they clocked off after 50 minutes shows that there's still several demons in the Warriors make up. Verdict: Will be relying on two veterans to take them all the way. The Warriors will be in the Finals, but the performances of Jones and Price will determine where. PARRAMATTA EELSPositive: They were able to come from 20 points down and get within striking distance. Negative: The halves combination continues to plague the Eels and Jarryd Hayne admits that he's more comfortable at fullback than pivot. It's quite ironic that the Eels best option to play alongside Brett Finch could well be a Mortimer. TALKING POINTCan the Warriors take the title across the Tasman? It was hard enough for the Sydney folk when it went down the Federal Hwy and painful when it went north of Tweed Heads. Final reconciliations have shown the crowd topped 20,000 for the Vodafone Warriors' season-opening NRL clash against Parramatta at Mount Stadium on Saturday night.
The crowd number posted on the night was just under 17,500 but checks today revealed a fault with a scanner.
The revised figure is 20,102, one of the biggest turnouts for the first home match of the season in the club's history.
Apart from a 30,000-strong crowd for the historic debut appearance against Brisbane in 1995, there have been only three other times when the equivalent fixture attracted a crowd of 20,000.
