Source: www.melbournestorm.com.auThe Melbourne Storm has come away with a hard earned 16-14 win against the Penrith at Olympic Park, extending their winning streak over the Panthers to five games.
With the Panthers coming off two convincing wins and the Storm an unconvincing loss, the game was always going to be a very physical encounter.
The usually reliable Melbourne defence was reeling early in the first half as Brad Tighe scored in the 5th minute.
Panthers centre Michael Jennings, caught Steve Turner flat-footed and accelerated into the clear, Jennings passing to Tighe who went over for the early try.
Panthers' playmaker Luke Lewis started at five-eighth and came close to adding to the Storm's woes but was denied by the video referee.
The Storm regrouped to wear down the Panthers defence with three successive sets of six and were rewarded when Billy Slater put it down under the posts in the 16th minute.
The remainder of the half was hard-hitting football as both teams tried to exert their dominance.
The Storm's back three of Turner, Anthony Quinn and Slater were exceptional in defence and just as creative in attack.
Ryan Hoffman tried everything including the odd grubber kick, but neither side could register a score leaving it tied at 6-6 at half-time.
The second half started much the same as the first with physicality and intensity.
Quinn broke the deadlock in the 47th minute, timing his jump to perfection to cleanly take a Cooper Cronk rain maker and go over for a try. Cameron Smith made the difficult conversion to put the Storm up 12-6.
The Storm built on their lead with a penalty conversion, but the eight point buffer didn't last long as Lewis ran over for a try under the posts.
Will Chambers was having a quiet night and things didn't get any better when he was put on report for a dangerous tackle on Panthers' fullback, Lachlan Coote.
Coote went off injured and Michael Gordon converted the penalty to again even the scores in the 58th minute.
The trading of penalties continued when Smith converted to give the Storm a 16-14 lead with 19 minutes still to play.
Storm fans had their hearts in their mouths when Panthers' winger Shane Elford crossed with eight minutes to go, only for it to be disallowed for a forward pass.
The Storm kept cool under pressure and held on for a gritty two-point win.
Slater played one of his best games for the season, and former Wentworthville player James Maloney, the latest of Craig Bellamy's backline experiments, had an admirable first up performance at five-eighth.
The Storm is back on the road next week against the Wests Tigers.
