Source: www.titans.com.auA piece of individual brilliance from veteran Mat Rogers tonight secured the Jetstar Gold Coast Titans their fifth win of the season in a 16-10 victory over Canberra at Skilled Park.
Rogers scored a 78th minute try to break a 10-all deadlock and hand his side its fourth straight win in front of a crowd of 18,510.
While it was far from pretty, the win keeps the Titans at the top of the ladder after six rounds heading into next week's clash against Penrith at CUA Stadium.
Titans co-captain Scott Prince described how his side had been setting up for a field goal in the dying minutes but elected to run the ball when the Raiders defence anticipated the play.
Veteran Rogers then took advantage by slicing through the defence to score to the left of the posts.
"It wasn't planned as such, we sort of set it up pretty disappointingly,'' said Prince.
"They (Canberra) saw it coming but their right edge didn't come up so I hit the 'Rat' and sat back and watch him do his thing.
"I was probably thinking there was more opportunity on the outside but with 'Rat' he's got the ability to step and swerve and is very elusive.
"The old mate showed some pace too so it was good.''
Titans coach John Cartwright said he was satisfied with the win despite his side's dour performance.
"Games these day are too hard to win and get disappointed,'' he said.
"Disappointed is probably not the word, I just no we've got a lot of improvement in us.
"I think we're maybe just trying a little too hard.
"We have struggled a bit to score tries in games ? maybe we just tried a little to hard tonight.
"We set the game up perfectly, we just failed where we are pretty good at.''
The home side was locked in a dour battle for the opening 50 minutes, with the Raiders enjoying a 6-4 halftime lead.
However, the injection of former Raiders speedster William Zillman off the interchange bench for the Titans saw the Gold Coast hit the lead for the first time in the match.
Zillman pounced onto a grubber kick from halfback Scott Prince to score and give the home side a 10-6 advantage.
The Raiders though locked things up at 10-all with 10 minutes remaining when winger Adrian Purtell pounced on a grubber kick from captain Alan Tongue to cap a freakish try in a movement which started with a kick from Joel Monaghan across the other side of the field.
But Rogers proved a cool head when the Titans needed one to come up with the match winning play two minutes from full-time.

Source: www.titans.com.auA slice of history will be created at Skilled Park tomorrow night when hard working duo Nathan Friend and Brett Delaney become the first Jetstar Gold Coast Titans to play 50 games for the club.
Highlighting the pair's consistency over the past three seasons, the duo will notch their landmark 50th game in tomorrow night's clash against Canberra at Skilled Park.
Remarkably, both have missed just four games for the club since its inaugural match in March, 2007.
Friend joked there had been some friendly banter exchanged between he and Delaney as they went neck and neck in the race to reach 50 games.
"There's always rivalry between me and Frog (Delaney) but I'm just happy I can share it with someone,'' said Friend.
"It's great to pick up a milestone, especially at a new franchise.
"I'm probably lucky I didn't have too many injuries over the first couple of seasons.
"I'm looking forward to it, it'll be fantastic.''
Both have cemented themselves as regular first graders since joining the Titans.
Prior to arriving on the Gold Coast, Delaney had played just 18 games in two seasons for Parramatta while Friend had notched 35 games for Melbourne and Brisbane over five years.
"I had to share it with Friendy, but that's alright,'' joked Delaney of the milestone.
"I'll just keep plugging away.
"I'm excited, it's always good to play 50 games.
"I just can't wait to get out there on Friday night in front of a big crowd.''
Titans coach John Cartwright said while the 50 game milestone was probably only halfway to the mark that most players aspired to, it was good to see a pair of 'real workers' reach the landmark first.
"It's great to see that those two guys, who are real workers and probably don't get the credit they deserve, reach that milestone,'' he said.
The Titans have lost prop Aaron Cannings for tomorrow's clash with a shoulder injury.
Front rower Michael Henderson will make his return from a groin injury in Cannings' place, while youngster Will Matthews has been included on the Titans' interchange bench.
