Source: www.cowboys.com.auRiding tall on the back of magnificent defence, the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys totally overpowered the Newcastle Knights in a 36-10 victory on a damp Dairy Farmers Stadium.
The 11,892 Monday night crowd witnessed a dominant Cowboys display which drew praise from everyone including Newcastle coach Brian Smith, who described the Cowboys as comprehensive in victory and his own side as "patchy".
The game started as an arm wrestle though, with each side scoring in the first 20 minutes.
The scores were locked at 6-6 until a John Williams' try off a brilliant Matt Bowen pass in the 21st minute put the Cowboys back in the lead.
An ankle tap by prop Antonio Kaufusi on flying Newcastle winger Aquila Uate in the 27th minute was a defining moment, with possession returning to the Cowboys and Steve Southern crossing a minute later to bring up an 18-6 lead which was the half time score.
It was all one-way traffic in the second half with three Cowboys tries, before the Knights finally broke free from the bruising defence to score out wide for a consolation try in the 67th minute.
Adding to the occasion, Luke O'Donnell was named in the New South Wales Origin side, while the Cowboys wait another day to discover who has made the Queensland side.
The only down side to the victory was a knee injury to Travis Burns who will miss 3-5 weeks.

Mon May 25, 2009
This match has been billed as a preview for State of Origin with two of the NRL's form players - Johnathan Thurston and Kurt Gidley - going head-to-head and their respective teams boasting impeccable recent form.
The Cowboys have won four of their past five games and the Knights six of their past seven, while playmakers Gidley and Thurston are unquestionably two of the NRL's finest performers.
Thurston has reaped a rich bounty of tries and points over the past fortnight, crossing for six tries and landing 14 goals in successive victories by Australia and the Cowboys (two) during that time.
Gidley has also been outstanding in Knights' wins over the Titans and the Roosters after appearing off the bench for Australia.
The Knights have experienced few difficulties in Townsville over the years and have won five of their last seven encounters there.
Look to a Cowboys try as First Scoring Play ($2) and a Cowboys/Knights ($7) or Knights/Cowboys ($6-50) outcome in the Half/Full Double.
For First Tryscorer look to Ben Farrar ($13), Matt Bowen ($9) or Johnathan Thurston ($15) for the Cowboys or James McManus ($11), Kurt Gidley ($13) or Junior Sau ($15) for the Knights.
