Source: www.abc.net.auWests turned in a scintillating attacking performance to notch up a 54-20 destruction of the hapless Rabbitohs at Sydney's Olympic stadium on Saturday evening.
It was the Tigers of old with the ball in hand, with the outstanding Robbie Farah directing an adventurous style of play that produced his side's best display this season.
The 10-try victory kept the Tigers' slim hopes of finals football alive in 2009 while denting that of the Rabbitohs, who slumped to their sixth successive defeat.
Wests are still in the lower reaches of the table on 14 points, only one point behind the woefully out of form Rabbits.
English recruit Gareth Ellis said the Tigers have recovered well after a tough spell which delivered one win in eight games.
"We have promised to play like that for a few weeks but we have let ourselves down with the fundamentals of the game - the ball control and the one-on-one misses in defence," he told ABC Grandstand.
"But tonight it all came together. It wasn't without blemishes but it's a great win which we have been looking for for some time.
"As a team we have stuck together over these weeks, we haven't led any of the outside stuff get to us and we've dug deep and kept working hard and it has paid off tonight."
Farah caused havoc all night out of dummy half for the Tigers on the back of a powerful performance by his forward pack.
The New South Wales hooker was equally dangerous on the fringes where he silenced a few critics with his creativity and helping Taniela Tuiaki pick up a first-half hat-trick.
"Like any team, the forwards win matches and the backs decide by how many," Ellis added.
"We have some experience and some youth and it's blending well and it bodes well for the future."
The barnstorming Tuiaki scored all three of his tries in the opening half hour to take the Tigers to a 26-10 lead at the break.
The floodgates were well and truly thrown open in the second 40 minutes with Corey Payne, Tim Moltzen, Beau Ryan, John Skandalis, Shannon Gallant all finishing with tries and Blake Ayshford grabbing a double.
A hat-trick to youngster Luke Capewell was about the only highlight in another error prone performance by Souths.
The lowest point came just before half time following Capewell's second try to make it 22-10.
The Rabbits failed to catch the resulting kick-off on the full and the bounce comically fell into the hands of the rushing Ayshford who off-loaded to Moltzen to slide over unopposed in the corner.
Wests Tigers: 54 (T Tuiaki 3, B Ayshford 2, C Payne, T Moltzen, B Ryan, J Skandalis, S Gallant tries; B Marshall 7/10 goals)
Rabbitohs 20 (L Capewell, N Merritt tries; C Sandow 2/3, I Luke 0/1 goals)
