Wolves continue excellent run of recent form

Castleford Tigers suffered a 34-18 engage Super League defeat to Warrington Wolves just six days after their shattering last-gasp Carnegie Challenge Cup quarter-final defeat at Huddersfield Giants.

To rub salt into their wounds it was against an in-form Warrington side who themselves booked a place in the semi-finals of the competition.

Castleford, who lost for the fourth time in five league and cup games, led through efforts from Kirk Dixon and Richard Owen but went into the interval trailing by four points after Lee Briers and Louis Anderson both scored converted tries.

Michael Shenton's try reduced the deficit to six points but a double from Vinnie Anderson, and seven tries in all, put the Tigers to the sword.

The Wolves were first on the attack when the hosts gave away a soft penalty early on.

But they defended well, much to the frustration of the visitors who worked the ball from left to right and back again, probing the Tigers defence - but to no avail.

Stand-off Rangi Chase began to dictate play and linked up well with Shenton who almost broke clear.

But after the winger broke the Warrington ranks and played the ball, Craig Huby had nobody directly in front of him.

Instead of driving for the line the prop threw a huge pass out wide where Dixon took the ball on the far touchline before stepping his way past two defenders on his way to the line with only four minutes on the clock.

Dixon, presented with a difficult conversion attempt, was unsuccessful.

Second row Sione Faumuina, who drifted from one side of the field to the other, created a second try for the home side with 18 minutes on the clock.

He collected the ball on the left and did well to offload to Shenton who found Owen on the touchline.

Still with plenty to do, the corner flag and a defender to contend with, he stooped to collect the ball and finished well in the corner. But Dixon was again off target as he looked to add the extras.

Briers pulled one back for the Wolves in the 23rd minute when there appeared to be little on.

Jon Clarke took ball out of dummy half and threw a pass between two Castleford defenders and Briers punched his way through.

Chris Bridge converted and Louis Anderson gave the Wolves the lead six minutes before the break following some strong forward play.
The second row took a short pass and brushed off the tackles of Faumuina and Dean Widders before diving over the line.

Bridge converted to give the away side a four-point lead, while Castleford had a try disallowed for a forward pass on the stroke of half-time.

The Tigers almost made the perfect start to the second period when Widders raced towards the line but a superb tackle from Richie Mathers denied him as he attempted to ground the ball.

Then, in the 43rd minute, Ryan McGoldrick's loose pass following a scrum in the middle of the pitch was intercepted by Briers who raced 40 metres to score.

Five minutes later Briers turned provider and sent Matt King over as the Tigers defence stood off him and allowed him to cross without any real tackle being attempted.
