Huddersfield Giants enhanced their engage Super League play-off credentials by moving into third spot with a hard-fought 30-14 victory over derby rivals Wakefield Trinity Wildcats at a sun-drenched Galpharm Stadium.

The Giants largely dominated the first half and early tries from hooker Scott Moore and loose forward David Faiumu helped to establish a 12-4 interval lead.

Wakefield crossed through Scott Grix on the half-hour mark and then came within two points of the Giants 11 minutes after the break with a converted try from Tony Martin.

John Kear's men began to dominate as the second half progressed but they had a try from wing Matt Petersen disallowed before Faiumu crossed again in the 59th minute to put Huddersfield 18-10 ahead.

And the Giants put the result beyond doubt in the 69th minute when wing David Hodgson crossed and but Wakefield refused to go away and hit back through Petersen.

Yet the Giants had the final say when Liam Fulton waltzed through a static Wakefield defence to claim his side's fifth try and full-back Brett Hodgson landed his fifth conversion.

The Giants led in the fourth minute when a fine run from Australian full-back Brett Hodgson which took him close to the line and Moore followed up to burrow over from close range.

Hodgson added the first of his five goals and Huddersfield continued to attack with aggression and no little skill.

Wakefield had a fleeting opportunity to cross the whitewash in the 10th minute when Ryan Atkins found Petersen and he was tackled into touch by Hodgson.

With England prop Eorl Crabtree again prominent for Huddersfield, the momentum remained largely with the hosts and they doubled their lead in the 13th minute when Faiumu went over from close range.

Brett Hodgson added the conversion with ease but Wakefield hit back on the half-hour mark when Danny Brough found Jason Demetriou to his right and he sent Grix diving over in the right corner.

Huddersfield had a try disallowed on the stroke of half-time when replacement Lee Mossop touched down but was penalised for obstruction.

Wakefield improved markedly after the restart and stand-off Martin went over in the 51st minute for a try which Brough converted to bring the scores to 12-10.

Moments later Petersen touched down in the left corner but referee Phil Bentham disallowed the score and Huddersfield breathed again.

Shortly before the hour mark, the Wildcats could not stop Faiumu plunging over the line from close range and Brett Hodgson added his third conversion to give the Giants a little breathing space at 18-10.

With 11 minutes remaining Huddersfield claimed their fourth try when Michael Lawrence was afforded the space to send David Hodgson in at the left corner and Brett Hodgson again converted.

Wakefield refused to surrender and hit back with six minutes remaining when Petersen dived over in the left corner.

Yet Brough could not convert and Fulton added a fifth for the Giants with two minutes remaining when he burst clear and Brett Hodgson added his fifth conversion to cap a fine move for the Giants.

Robinson and Drew talk about West Yorkshire derby

Key playmakers Luke Robinson and Brad Drew spoke about the eagerly anticipated match between the Giants and the Wakefield Trinity Wildcats this Sunday at the Galpharm Stadium kick off 3:00pm.

Giants star Robinson spoke about his delight at being picked as the Rugby League World player of the month award for May, and praised the forward pack for contributing significantly to his and the team's success.

"My form this year has been going all right, and it's nice to have that personal accolade. Generally, my form comes off what the forwards are doing and if the forwards are doing a decent job, it makes it easier for the half-backs with me and Kev (Kevin Brown), along with Hodgo (Brett Hodgson) at the back."

Robinson is focussed on Sunday's derby with Wakefield as the Giants look to back up last weekends win at Salford. He knows that with just two points separating the teams that the Wildcats will be tough opponents.

"We are expecting a tough challenge from Wakefield on Sunday. We put in one of our best performances of the season together over there, we clicked as a unit and individually we played very well. However, Wakefield were missing key players that day in Danny Brough, Brad Drew and Ferguson, who are all key men for them and it will be a different prospect with those playing. We are expecting a very tough encounter."

Brad Drew on the other hand, said how excited he is to playing on the Galpharm pitch in front of all the Claret and Gold fans, this time though, on the opposition.

"I'm really looking forward to playing on the Galpharm pitch, it will be the first time since I moved to Wakefield, so I'm looking forward to playing."

"I hope that the Giants fans will give me a good reception; I hope I don't get too many boos! I've got some great memories at Huddersfield and met some good people there and I'm still friends with the majority of the side. I'm hoping I don't get too much of a rowdy reception, but if I do, that's the game and I'll just get on with it."

Drew also thinks that his team will be looking for revenge from the Belle Vue game, which resulted in a convincing Giants victory.

"As Sunday's game is important, I don't think it will have too big a bearing on the season as they gave us a bit of a touch up at our place a couple of weeks ago. We definitely are looking to have a good performance especially after being well beaten at home last time."

"We're confident we can beat anyone if we play well and we're just going to Huddersfield and try to perform the best we can. If we perform and do the best we can, then we'll be happy with that, but when we don't perform and know we can do better, that's when you get upset."

With Primary School Children going free, a family of four can watch the game from just 33 when pre-purchasing their ticket prior to matchday. Season Ticket holders are also reminded that they can utilise their Bring a Buddy vouchers, which allow adult entry for just 10.

The Giants are also offering the combined emergency services within the local region a special ticket deal to see the mouth-watering West Yorkshire derby. In recognition of all the work done by the combined emergency services, the Giants are offering a discounted rate of 10 for adults and 6 for concessions (seniors/students), which can be obtained by showing emergency service identification at the Galpharm Stadium Ticket Office (preferably prior to the day of the game).

The Galpharm Stadium is open Monday-Friday 9am-5pm and Saturday 9am-12 midday and the Ticket Hotline is 0870 44 44 552.
